For Edna St. Vincent Millay
Love does not have the force to create stars,
nor make the sun grow brighter by its whim;
it can’t revive the dead, nor remove scars,
nor save a life, nor help the drowning swim.
Love does not have the power to endure
when a stone sign is carved with “rest in peace”;
love cannot make men live forever more,
no matter that it claims it will not cease.
Love does not have the strength to move the land,
or change the works of planets in the sky,
cannot transform a snake so it can stand,
or make an earthbound man begin to fly.
But still, the thoughts I find inside my head
are not of wonders, but of you instead.
