Daring Yourself to Think BU

By kede

Boston University Viewbook cover

My role in admissions isn’t a traditional one. I don’t travel to meet with prospective students. It’s not part of my job to welcome students who visit our beautiful campus. But I still communicate with them every day.

I develop the publications you receive throughout your journey as a prospective student or applicant, including our keystone piece, the Viewbook. You may have already received a “We Dare You” Viewbook in the mail, or maybe you have no idea what I’m talking about (if not, you can request to have one mailed to you).

As my colleagues read tens of thousands of applications, they have heard from many of you how the “daring” theme has made you realize why BU is so different from other universities, and so worth applying to.

In many essays, applicants have shared how their search for a university comes down to more than just a name or reputation; they’re interested in finding a place where they can thrive. It may sound silly to pick a university based on an oversized pamphlet, but many of you felt that our Viewbook stood out and showed how BU will allow you to stretch your mind in ways you never imagined before. You felt you belonged at BU just from the stories it told and the campus personality it conveyed. I’m thrilled we were able to convey the essence of this university through these pages.

My job here is, in some ways, made simple because what speaks to you on the pages of the Viewbook are simply facts about BU. These facts—the incredible research, courses, global experiences, and perspectives of our students—vividly show how BU is a perfect fit for the students who ultimately come here.

Take the students who provided local media coverage remotely from the London Olympics. Or BU’s only deaf freshman who is learning Arabic through American Sign Language to further her archaeology studies. The young woman who is educating students in Belize on the affects of diabetes. And the young man who founded a charitable “mailbox” campaign on campus.

Then there’s the undergrad students working with faculty on graduate-level research projects that would blow your mind. I could list them, but it’s really worth checking them out yourself.

The truth is, there aren’t enough pages in the Viewbook for us to share even a small percentage of what’s happening at BU. But I’m so happy that the things we are able to share are inspiring you to apply here.

As you anxiously await your decisions, we will continue doing our jobs to keep you filled in on BU happenings and interesting bits of information. And regardless of whether you are accepted and decide to attend BU or not, I hope you always find ways to dare yourself to keep growing.

Sr. Assistant Director of Admissions Marketing and Communications

The Weekender

By kede

10-2962-ROCKCLIMB-030You’ve probably already read or heard a lot about what life inside the classroom might be like at BU. But what would your weekends look like while living along Comm. Ave?

BU Today (a daily publication that you should definitely follow as you await decisions or prepare to come to campus) recently began offering the Weekender, a weekly listing that will run each Thursday of area happenings both on and off campus. It’s a great way to get a sense of all the hilarious, silly, interesting, funny, and thought-provoking things happening just steps from the dorm rooms on campus.

Where else can you see Claire Danes accept the Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year Award, go rock climbing and check out the “A Day in Pompeii” exhibit at the Museum of Science – all in one weekend?! Many of these events are annual favorites among current BU students.

Go ahead, read The Weekender: January 26 – 29 and follow them on Twitter (@butoday) while you’re there. It’s the best way to get in touch with life at BU (besides visiting campus in person).

Dr. King would be proud

By kede

Speaking of alumnus Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I would venture to say he’d be very proud of the incredible work done by BU’s Admissions Student Diversity Board (ASDB). This group of bright and ambitious students are helping to ensure diversity on campus at BU by actively recruiting new students from multicultural communities. They belive that a diverse community creates a better education, inside and outside the classroom.

And they’re having a lot of fun along the way. Check out their student-run blog which highlights some of their incredible experiences together here at BU – from studying abroad in Italy to attending an International Healthcare Gala.

If you have any questions on how you might fit in at BU, don’t be shy! Feel free to ask any of them questions on the diverse opportunities offered at BU by emailing asdb@bu.edu.

About ASDB: The Admissions Student Diversity Board (ASDB) helps keep us one of America’s most diverse centers of learning by actively recruiting from multicultural communities. This student organization works with Admissions to increase enrollment and enrich the experience of African-American/Black, Latino/Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and Native American students at BU.

Admissions Tip #2

By kede

You’re ready to take on the world. You’re excited about finishing high school and being treated like an adult. But wait, don’t forget to enjoy your last year of high school!

It’s easy to get caught up in looking for schools and thinking about the future, but don’t forget about the present. Try to enjoy your last year or two of high school—stay involved in activities, try new classes, and remain close with your friends.

However, try to avoid the other end of the spectrum. Remember that once you are admitted to Boston University, you must submit your proof of high school graduation prior to enrollment to ensure you have satisfied all state graduation requirements. That means that your senior grades count. So don’t check out of your senior year just yet.

BU students travel too

By kede

We’ve talked a lot about our BU Admissions Directors’ chance to travel the globe while meeting prospective students. But, did you know as a BU student you’ll have the same opportunity?

Our study abroad program is the premier program in the country, with academic and internship opportunities in over 25 countries. Always wanted to visit Italy? At BU you can. How about Morocco, China or New Zealand? Yep, we have programs there too.

As impressive as the 1.3-mile BU campus is, we encourage students to get out of here and challenge themselves! Some are pursuing engineering studies in Dresden, Germany, others are interning at Yahoo in London. You can study language, liberal arts, fine arts, science, business, engineering, or pursue an internship. The opportunities abroad really are unbelievable.

As you consider applying to BU, think about the opportunity to study in an internationally ranked and recognized U.S. university, but also consider the chance to gain an international perspective of your own. Who knows? Maybe one day you’ll have a blog just like this one to share your study abroad experiences in.

BU is #1

By kede

Woohooo! Unigo and HuffPost College named Boston University the #1 Best Place to Go to College!

Below is a short excerpt, you can read the full post here:

With a storied history, bustling sports culture, and more than 50 colleges in the city, Boston is one of the most exciting places in the country to be a student, and BU is right in the thick of it. “Often, friends and I would go around the city to eat in Boston’s ‘little Italy’ the North End, or catch a Red Sox game, or go to a local bar and shoot pool. The benefit, for me, of going to college within a city was there never seemed to be a shortage of anything to do,” says Rachel, a theatre major.

Lights, camera, action!

By kede

IMG_2235John Gursky joined the Admissions team on September 1, and today he toured the College of Communication’s (COM) BUTV10 film studios to learn more about the curriculum for COM students. He does a pretty great impression of a news anchor, doesn’t he? BUTV10.com is Boston University’s student-produced and managed television station. Established in 2005, it’s a University-wide resource that presents the work of students, faculty and alumni via campus channel 10, live streaming video and on-demand web content. If you’re thinking about applying to COM, you should know it’s just one of the cool resources offered to students.

On October 17, John will begin his international travel to spread the word about all of BU’s exciting academic opportunities in nine undergraduate colleges and schools. There’s a lot to learn before then! Good luck John.

BU in Beijing!

By kede

Kelly BeijingDuring her travels in Beijing, Assistant Vice President & Executive Director of Admissions Kelly A. Walter visited with Principal Tian at Beijing School No. 80.  This is one of the top schools in Beijing, and their most recent visitor was the President of China, Hu Jintao. This is the only school he visited in Beijing. Very impressive!

BU is one of the top 10 universities in the U.S. for international students, with representation from more than 100 countries – including Argentina, China, France, India, Poland, and Turkey.
