I first saw "Showboat" when I was a child in segregated NC. I had never seen a film that mentioned racial issues. When they took Julie/Ava Gardner off the showboat--just because. To this day it still ties me in knots. Well, Showboat research and reading the book and different versions has become part of life--as well as Kern's other work. i found out prior to "Showboat" all shows were girls and hoofers and vaudville. After the premiere Ziegfeld thought it was a failure. The audience filed out quietly. The next day there were lines around the block. Anyway, I love the score. The only person in the production I'm familiar with is Nathan Gunn. I enjoy him frequently at the Met. I hope to see you on stage there very soon. Your voice can take you there--I believe it will.
