Blogs – Work In Progress

Now that we have completed the installation of the latest release of WordPress, version 2.7.1, we have begun the following improvements and additions to the service:

  1. Ensuring that a disclaimer is automatically added to all student and student organization blogs.  This is required by the General Counsel’s office and is a prerequisite for officially announcing the service.
  2. Updating the themes available to publishers.
  3. Adding functionality that we’ve built and launched for WordPress websites on www.bu.edu and www.bumc.bu.edu.

We will send announcements as we complete this work.

Is there any way to standardize the way blog themes are handled in terms of custom headers and text? The Universal theme lets you change the header image but not hide or change the font of the text (I have tried clicking the “hide text” button and it doesn’t work – the text is still there, and that serif font looks awful laid over most images). However the other two fonts don’t let you change the header image – yoghurt doesn’t seem to let you do *anything* to the header.

Can we please get some standardization with regards to changing the header image and text? All I want is to be able to add a custom header image and NOT have the really ugly default text overlaid onto it.

FYI, I’m looking to recommend or not recommend BU Blogs to several hundred students come the fall as part of their online media development in classes. If BU Blogs isn’t ironed out by September, I’ll have to send them all to Wordpress.com instead.

Noticed an error in my above post:

“However the other two fonts don’t let you change the header image – yoghurt doesn’t seem to let you do *anything* to the header.”

That should be “the other two themes”, referring to the WP Default (based on Kubrick) and Yoghourt. I’m using the Default profile currently because it’s the least ugly of the three headers. I like the overall look of Yoghourt theh best, but you can’t change the header at all, and it’s a fairly ugly header.
