2. The first LaTeX seminar will take place on Friday, March 8th from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Crosstown, room TBD. This seminar, which will be taught by Jacqui Milton & Paula Griffin, is the first of a two-part series and will cover basics & the thesis template. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops and follow along with the material and examples. Lunch will be provided by the BSA. Instructions on how to download and install LaTeX will be provided a week before the first seminar and you MUST get LaTeX on your laptops before the seminar.

Also, a quick note... the BSA e-mail is not checked on a regular basis. Should you have any questions for the BSA, please e-mail the officers directly.

Updates, Reminders & Upcoming Events

Greetings from the BSA!

First off, the minutes from the first BSA meeting of the semester have been uploaded. You can access them in "Meeting Minutes" towards the bottom of the column to the right of this post. All of the meeting minutes are listed in chronological order so the most recent meeting minutes are the very last entry.

A few highlights that were discussed in the meeting:

1.) Meetings will now be scheduled on the second Thursday of every month at 1:15 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 8th in the Biostatistics Student Room (CT345).

2.) We have an some officer nominations! As you know, we have open spots for Secretary and Treasurer. We have received three self-nominations thus far for these positions and we will be accepting nominations up until November 1st. Once all nominations are in, we will send around an e-mail poll for voting in the Officers, with introductions about each of the nominees. Again, the nomination period is still open so if you are interested in either the Secretary position or the Treasurer position, please send an e-mail to Danielle at denserro@bu.edu.

3.) There was much talk about requested student events, both academic and social, as well as community service. A couple scheduled events to add to your calendar:

The Biostatistics Department / DCC Halloween Party - Wednesday, October 31 at 12 pm in CT332 (Information to follow via e-mail)

BSA Happy Hour - Friday, November 16 at 5 pm - Location TBD (probably in the Allston area)

We are also planning a Registration Lunch for either 11/7/2012 or 11/9/2012, which is a chance for the new students to ask the returning students about courses, qualifiers, thesis writing, etc., as well as eat provided lunch and socialize! As soon as this event is scheduled, we will update you with the time, room, etc.

A lot more than the above listed topics was discussed at the meeting so again, please check out the Meeting Minutes from 10/11/2012.

Hope to see you at the upcoming events and the meeting on 11/8! 🙂

New semester, new officers… just NEW!

Hello there, students! This welcome post is a little on the late side (our apologies) but better late than never! We hope you all had a fantastic summer and that your Fall semesters are going well so far. We know how busy everyone gets with classes, RAs, TAs, jobs, etc but we have some exciting announcements!

First off...

We keep saying "we"... and by "we", we now mean Danielle Enserro & Sean Lacey, your new President and Vice President. Sarah and Carlee, after years of being amazing officers, have moved on to bigger things (you know... like drowning in their theses) so we've taken over! Think of this as the BSA remixed... BSA v2.0 if you will. 🙂 However, now that we've moved up to Prez and VP, we now have TWO officer positions open!! Whoa, whoa.. don't all jump up at once. Seriously, we need to fill our Secretary and Treasurer positions, neither of which require a lot of time, just a few basic duties for each. If you are interested at all or if you have questions about what being either Secretary or Treasurer entails, please e-mail Danielle at denserro@bu.edu. Please, we really hope to hear from you!

Second...

The first BSA meeting of Fall 2012 is scheduled for Thursday, October 11 at 1:30 pm in the Biostatistics student room on the 3rd floor of Crosstown. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come by, even if just to check in and say "hi". There will be some sort of snack item(s) there, although we've not decided what yet. We'd love to see your awesome faces there, whether it be the returning students or the new students. The agenda for this meeting is to discuss the direction the BSA is taking this year and to get any ideas you may have on events or gatherings you'd like to participate in, be it social or informational. The BSA is here for YOU, so it's important that you tell us what you would like to get out of it. We will do our best to make what we can happen.

That's about it so far. Be sure to check back here for updates, announcements, events, etc!

Have a great rest of September/start to October and we hope to see you on October 11! 😀
