When did you start fencing? First semester my freshman year.

Why did you start fencing? I remember telling myself I would try new things when I started college. Fencing was definitely new. I learned so much at my first practice and have continued to grow as part of BUFC.

What is one of your favorite fencing memories? I can only remember the embarrassing ones. At my first tournament, I managed to make it out of pools and into direct eliminations. I wasn’t aware DE’s meant fifteen touch bouts instead of five. After my opponent scored five touches, I took off my mask and went to shake hands. The referee had to tell me the bout was still going.

What are you most proud of in your fencing career? When I joined the club, it was a lot of learn by doing. More experienced members were always willing to help, though. I really felt like part of the club the first time I was able to help someone new.

Off the fencing strip: I’m an avid reader and an occasional city biker. I also love science.
