When did you start fencing? My freshman year at BU

Why did you start fencing? Fencing wasn’t a “thing” where I grew up; I only knew of it through Olympics coverage and the occasional film scene, so I leaped at the chance when I saw a certain mob of white-clad, bestial-roaring individuals at SPLASH.

What is one of your favorite fencing memories? Well, there was this one time we were coming back from a tournament and we took a wrong turn into Connecticut… Where do I begin? Practice tomfoolery, launching ourselves onto the squishy mats at The Big One like glorious elephant seals, and eating everything all the time. There’s hardly a dull moment.

What was a proud moment in your BU fencing career? I shouldn’t say this too loudly because I wouldn’t have wanted to be the other person in this moment, but: during one of the NFCs, I managed to make it to overtime against a varsity fencer. In a last ditch effort to go out valiantly, I desperately flèched, hit her in the neck, got the winning touch, and very dramatically fell to my knees in happy tears. I was given a celebratory candy bar.

Off the fencing strip: I had an existential crisis in the Eastern Sahara once; I’ve danced with Bill Nye on more than one occasion; I guess I’m a published poet (it was about toast — literally, toast)
