The Boston University Art Gallery (BUAG) presents American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print, featuring the work of one of the nation’s oldest printing shops, Nashville, Tennessee’s Hatch Show Print. The exhibition illustrates the fusion of art with popular culture and music history, highlighting the uniquely American posters produced to advertise everything from vaudeville shows to Elvis Presley albums. The opening will take place tonight from 6-8 PM at the Stone Gallery (855 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston).

The Institute for Athletic Coach Education (IACE) in the School of Education is hosting a 1-day conference for coaches, directors, and and leaders of youth sport at the Agganis Arena from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM today. Attendees will enjoy a rare opportunity to learn from exceptional sports practitioners who address issues relevant to coaches, while presenters will explore the psychological, emotional, social and moral dimensions of sport. Gotlieb Honors Robert B. Parker

The Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center will host a celebration of the life of noted writer Robert B. Parker, followed by a reception, today 5:30 PM in the Metcalf Ballroom (775 Commonwealth Ave., Second Floor). His archives, which are housed at the Gotlieb Center, will be exhibited and tributes to Parker’s life will be made by Sue Grafton, Dennis Lehane, Calvin Trillin and members of the Parker family. Parker, regarded as one of America’s greatest crime-fiction authors, is remembered as being an award-winning novelist, a sought after professor at Northeastern University and a famously devoted husband and father.

The College of Communication is hosting The Power of Narrative: Timeless Art in an Urgent Age today from 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM at the Photonics Center. The conference will explore the power of narrative in today’s media landscape and the timeless techniques of story-telling. Prize-winning writers and editors will discuss narrative in its many forms — including books, film and television. One panel will bring together writers of fiction and nonfiction to discuss the place of fact and reporting in creating a compelling story. Lee Woodruff to Present Meredith E. Drench Lecture

Lee Woodruff will give the 2010 Meredith E. Drench Lecture today at Sargent College at 5:00 PM. The talk, titled Life Changes in an Instant: A Caregivers Journey, chronicles the journey of Woodruff’s family after her husband, journalist Bob Woodruff, was injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq. The critically acclaimed story has garnered national attention and brought to light the numerous soldiers returning from Iraq who are suffering from traumatic brain injuries. There will be a book signing and reception to follow the lecture. This event is free and open to the public.

Patterson embarked on his writing career after first establishing himself as a successful lawyer, serving as a liaison for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission to the Watergate Special Prosecutor. He also served as an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Ohio and has been a partner in several prestigious United States law firms. This event is open to the public. Sargent College is supporting the Davis Phinney Foundation in its launch of Every Victory Counts, a new program for living well with Parkinson’s. The cornerstone of this program is a progressive, interactive manual designed to inform and inspire people to live well with Parkinson’s and take a more active role in managing the disease. Boston University is among leading Parkinson’s research centers with contributors to the manual’s content.
