The discussion included the importance of career services on campus, to the difficult economic times facing Universities, to study abroad and research funding.

Men’s basketball takes center stage at Madison Square Garden

On what many fans call the biggest stage in college sports, the Boston University men’s basketball team will square off against the Albany Great Danes tonight at Madison Square Garden. With tip-off set for 9:30 p.m, the Terriers (12-13, 7-4 AE) will be competing in the first-ever America East match-up at MSG.

Record 41,000+ and Counting Join Class of 2015 Applicant Pool

A record 41,734 applications, – up 9 percent from last year – have been submitted to BU’s undergraduate programs from prospective students vying for one of 4,000 slots in next year’s freshman class. Extremely well prepared and more diverse than last year’s group, the applicants have a higher grade point average and SAT score averages (1,896) – up 22 points higher than last year’s. Forty-eight percent of those hoping for admission to the class of 2015 are in the top 10 percent of their high school class. In terms of diversity, the pool shows a 19 percent increase in applications from international students, mainly from China, Korea, and Taiwan, an 8 percent increase in the number of African American students and a 22 percent increase in Hispanic/Latino students.

Laurie Pohl, vice president for enrollment and student affairs, believes the record number of applications is due to the fact that high school seniors are responding to real changes at BU.

Those changes? As BU President Dr. Robert A. Brown outlined in his 2010 State of the University letter to the BU community, over the past five years, the University has put more money into growing the faculty and increasing financial aid. BU has also made significant investments in programs to support student life and student services, dormitories, concerts, and clubs.

This year’s applicants also show an increased interest in BU’s professional schools such as the College of Engineering, the College of Communication, and Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences — a trend that may reflect concern about the economy as students want to be equipped with the best possible skill sets upon graduation.

BU’s class of 1970 gets what they’ve long deserved, a graduation ceremony!

1970 was a year that saw the Beatles break up, the first Earth Day celebrated in the U.S., and All My Children hit the ABC airwaves. Born in 1970 were Actor Matt Damon and figure skating sweetheart Tonya Harding, while rock legends Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix joined the 27 Club. However, 1970 was also a year of social unrest on college campuses, resulting in several universities, including BU, canceling their commencement exercises.

Now, 40 years later, BU will bring closure to the class of 1970, as reported in a recent Boston Globe article, with over 300 members of the class coming back to campus to take part in the 2010 Boston University commencement.

The weekend ceremonies will begin with a slide show on Saturday, May 15th by nationally acclaimed photojournalist, author, and music historian Peter Simon. Through the Lens: Peter Simon (COM’70) and Your Generation will include images captured during his time as photo editor of the BU News.

A service of remembrance at Marsh Chapel will also be held on the 15th, to honor late classmates of the class of 1970, as well as to reflect on events of the era.

On May 16, prior to the University’s commencement ceremony, the class will take part in its own formal convocation at CFA‘s Concert Hall. The graduates will then march with the class of 2010 on Nickerson Field for commencement.
