Global Day of Service

Each April, the Alumni Association & Community Service Center team up to host and organize the Global Day of Service for BU community members. In 2010 3,736 GDS volunteers performed 14,971.5 hours of service in 43 cities. Service sites are set up around the world, providing a cohesive and organized global effort to further the ethic of service encouraged and demonstrated by the BU family. Busy that day? Don’t worry, they have built in a cushion so that GDS volunteer hours served between April 10 and April 24 will count toward their grand total. Sign up now

President Brown discusses higher ed issues on Bloomberg Radio

BU President Dr. Robert Brown recently joined Jane Williams on her Bloomberg EDU radio show to discuss big picture issues facing higher education institutions. The discussion included the importance of career services on campus, to the difficult economic times facing Universities, to study abroad and research funding.

Current issues in education: Bullying

Today, SED is honored to welcome Dorothy Espelage, Professor of Child Development and Associate Chair in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, for its Annual Spring Lecture. Espelage’s research addresses bullying and youth aggression. In light of the recent tragedies here in Massachusetts, the spring lecture discusses these topics and considers positive means to face them directly. All events will take place in the SED Auditorium (Room 130).

There are two sessions for this presentation.

Session 1 is an lecture by Dr. Espelage at 10 AM in room 130. To register for session 1 please visit here

BU Art Gallery appoints new Director, Chief Curator

The BU Art Gallery (BUAG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Kate McNamara to the role of Director and Chief Curator. McNamara comes to BUAG with an extensive background in curation and instruction both in New York and Western Massachusetts working at MoMA PS1 (Long Island City, NY), The Bronx Museum (New York, NY) and Real Art Ways (Hartford, CT), among many others. She will fill the position currently being held ad interim by Exhibitions and Special Projects Coordinator of BU’s School of Visual Arts Lynne Cooney and will begin her tenure in mid-March.

The Life of [Kerin] Riley

CAS Junior Kerin Riley left for Dublin on January 20 for 4 months to study at Dublin City University and intern at an international law firm. Riley is chronicling her experiences, good and bad, on her blog The Life of [Kerin] Riley which hosts messages to family and friends at home, pictures from her travels, musing on life, school and living abroad and reflections on gaeilge culture. We will be hosting posts from The Life of [Kerin] Riley throughout the semester to showcase what life is like for BU students studying abroad.

Beanpot begins tonight

Men’s hockey will play Boston College at the Garden tonight at 8 PM after Harvard and Northeastern face off at 5 PM. Couldn’t get tickets? BU Today will be live Tweeting from the game using #BUBeanpot streaming on their homepage. Both games will also be televised live in HD on NESN (channel 35 in the dorms). Go terriers!

Record 41,000+ and Counting Join Class of 2015 Applicant Pool

A record 41,734 applications, – up 9 percent from last year – have been submitted to BU’s undergraduate programs from prospective students vying for one of 4,000 slots in next year’s freshman class. Extremely well prepared and more diverse than last year’s group, the applicants have a higher grade point average and SAT score averages (1,896) – up 22 points higher than last year’s. Forty-eight percent of those hoping for admission to the class of 2015 are in the top 10 percent of their high school class. In terms of diversity, the pool shows a 19 percent increase in applications from international students, mainly from China, Korea, and Taiwan, an 8 percent increase in the number of African American students and a 22 percent increase in Hispanic/Latino students.

Laurie Pohl, vice president for enrollment and student affairs, believes the record number of applications is due to the fact that high school seniors are responding to real changes at BU.

Those changes? As BU President Dr. Robert A. Brown outlined in his 2010 State of the University letter to the BU community, over the past five years, the University has put more money into growing the faculty and increasing financial aid. BU has also made significant investments in programs to support student life and student services, dormitories, concerts, and clubs.

This year’s applicants also show an increased interest in BU’s professional schools such as the College of Engineering, the College of Communication, and Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences — a trend that may reflect concern about the economy as students want to be equipped with the best possible skill sets upon graduation.
