Gotlieb Center Archivist receives award from Peace Corps

Diane Gallagher, the nursing history and University archivist in the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, received the 2011 Lillian Carter Award from the Peace Corps on May 19 for her commitment to public service. The award recognizes an exceptional Peace Corps volunteer who served at age 50 plus and has continued to advance Peace Corps’ third goal to promote a better understanding of people from other nations on part of Americans. Former President Jimmy Carter and Peace Corps Deputy Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet presented Gallagher with the award at the Carter Center in Atlanta, GA. “Peace Corps service had been my dream since the day President Kennedy issued his call to service 50 years ago,” says Gallagher. After raising her family, she finally made her dream a reality by serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cape Verde from 1990-1992 at age 53 with her husband.

Coach Chambers heading to Penn State

BU Today reported that Men’s basketball coach Pat Chambers is leaving the University and has accepted the position of head coach at Penn State. Coach Chambers is credited with taking the Terriers to the NCAA tournament this year and having a 42-28 record during his tenure. Chambers came to BU from Villanova, where he was assistant coach, in 2009. NittanyWhiteOut reflected on Chambers’ career at BU via an interview with the Daily Free Press‘ new sports editor, and sports blogger, Craig Meyer: “He constantly harped on the importance of the team and coaching staff being like a family, and thinking of it that way, Chambers was much like the father — he kept order and was hard on his players when needed, but he did it for all the right reasons, namely that he cared so much for his guys.”

Sustainability in the City

BU’s Alumni Association is kicking off its brand new learning program BU Alumni College this summer. Alumni College is a stand-alone program designed to empower alumni through immersive educational experiences.

The inaugural Alumni College is called Sustainability in the City, which involves learning experiences where expert faculty from the College of Arts & Sciences will address critical and practical sustainability questions by way of lectures, field trips, lab experiences and classroom discussions. Other events include a trip to the New England Aquarium and a Sunset Harbor Cruise.

Registration for on-campus housing ends TODAY, May 27, and regular registration ends June 3.

New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks addresses BU COM graduates
