BU triumphs over Northeastern in first game of league play

Boston University hosted their home opener against Northeastern under the field lights at Nickerson Field on September 15.

BU received the ball and played across the sidelines, causing Northeastern’s defensive line to cluster.  A breakaway by Dee Nash (SAR ’14) and an offload to Julia Gowesky (COM ’15) got BU close to the try line before Northeastern’s defense got a tackle in.  After a strong drive by the forwards in the scrum, Ashley Teamer (CFA ’13) and Alex Hubelbank (SAR ’14) threw clean passes, allowing Teamer to score Boston’s first try of the match.

Noel Coleman (COM ’15) gained some ground before Northeastern won possession of the ball after scrums repeatedly collapsed.  Northeastern got their lone score from Sanam Foroughi, who touched the ball down in the far corner.

After kickoff, Hubelbank made a huge run for BU and Capt. Kiera Vinson (CAS ’13) supported her in the ruck.  Hubelbank scored the second try for BU.

The score was 15-5 at halftime.

Hubelbank scored again, 20-5, while powerhouse Aubrey MacGill (ENG ’13) and speedy Kendra Lenz (CFA ’13) link up for a 30 meter run.  Coleman added 5 points to the board with another forward try, and shortly afterm Vinson scored a try in the corner with Gowesky making the kick.  Replacement flyhalf Isabel Whitely scored and six terriers got involved in the play to add an additional try.

BU beat Northeastern 47-5.  Their next home game is against Norwich on October 20 at 7:30 p.m.
