About Us

The Boston University Zen Community (or as we call ourselves informally, BU Zen) is a Zen Buddhist community at the heart of B.U. practicing meditation in the style taught by the late Zen Master Seung Sahn, a Korean monk who came to the United States to teach and with the help of his students founded the Kwan Um School of Zen.

We practice under the guidance of Barbara Feldman, our faculty advisor, who teaches Yoga at BU and is a Dharma Teacher in the Kwan Um School of Zen. She is also the director of the Cambridge Zen Center, where she lives and practices. We also provide opportunities for teaching by the guiding teachers of the Cambridge Zen Center, Zen Master Bon Haeng (Mark Houghton) and Zen Master Bon Yeon (Jane Dobisz), subsidizing a College Zen Retreat at CZC once a semester.

We meet every Wednesday night from 730 – 9 pm during the academic year in the Marsh Room in the basement of Marsh Chapel (735 Commonwealth Avenue). Our routine consists of:

– Mind-body exercise, “Soen-Yu” (Zen Yoga)
– Full-body rest and relaxation
– Sitting meditation
– Dharma talk by Barbara Feldman or a guest speaker
– Social hour with (decaf) tea and cookies!

All levels of experience are welcome and we give a short instruction on sitting to newcomers.

We hope to see you at one of our meetings!

In the Dharma,

Mike Bruffee
