  1. Writing: Write a 500-word critical analysis of one of the pieces of art that we saw today at the GSU. Submit by Thursday at 9:00 AM via email to Jen.
  2. Grammar: Please do the two, on-line “grammar challenges” for Chapter 4.
  3. Project: Connect with your final project team about how to plan for your final project.
Tuesday, April 3, 2012:
  1. Reading: Use your critical reading skills to analyze the poems that we read today in class. Read the critical thinking strategy “A Poetry Primer” and answer the reading comprehension questions on p. 139, E “Analyzing Poetry.” Write your answers on a separate piece of paper to be submitted on Thursday.
  2. Writing: Rewrite Essay #3 based on my corrections. Resubmit with your original on Thursday.
  3. Listening: Listen to the Broadcast English task with poet Maya Angelou (pp. 154-155).
  4. Grammar: Read through Chapter 4 about modal verbs and study the examples on pp. 54-56 and pp. 62-63.
  5. Bonus: Attend BU’s “Robert Lowell Memorial Poetry Series” tonight at 7:30 PM at the Castle and receive a 100% grammar grade.   3. Quiz: There will be a vocabulary quiz on Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 vocabulary in class on Thursday.

  1. Writing: For Tuesday, March 27 at 9:00 AM – Please prepare one of the following options: 1) Write a 750-word, independent essay about one of the cultural anthropology topics on the handout listed below; or 2) Write a 500-word, integrated essay combining the short reading “Eye Contact in Two Cultures” with the NPR listening “Strangers Can Spot Genetic Disposition for Empathy.” Your paper should be emailed to me by 9:00 AM on Tuesday, March 27.

  1. Listening: Listen to the academic lecture for Chapter 1 (about proxemics) in Quest 3.
  2. Research: Research the nonverbal communication patterns of two different cultures. Be prepared to identify the two cultures and talk about similarities and differences as well as share your sources in class on Thursday.
  3. Grammar: Please do the two, on-line grammar review exercises for Chapters 2 & 6.
  4. Vocabulary: Study your new vocabulary list.
Tuesday, March 6, 2012:
  1. Grammar: Chapter 6: C3, C4, C6, C7, and C8.
  2. Reading: Finish reading The Rocking-Horse Winner.
  3. Vocabulary: Review and study vocabulary words related to the story.

Thursday, February 16, 2012:
  1. Essay: Please finish your science essay (2 pages, double spaced) for Tuesday. Email it to me by 9:00 AM.
  2. Speaking: Prepare a 3-5 minute formal presentation in response to “Project 2” on p. 233 (you can work individually or with a partner). If you want to use PowerPoint, that’s fine. Also, make sure to complete the presentation handout.
  3. Reading: Read the short article about zoos and answer the reading comprehension questions.
Tuesday, February 14, 2012:
  1. Essay: Respond to one of the science writing tasks (see below). Email me your essay by Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 9 AM. Please pay attention to editing and style.
  2. Listening: Listen to the Academic English listening task in Quest 3 and respond to the comprehension questions, pp. 224-231. Note: You can access all audio files on the CELOP homepage under “audio textbooks.”
  3. Grammar: Review grammar for Chapters 10, 12, and 14. Do the on-line activities as follows: Ch. 10, Grammar Challenge 1&2. Ch. 12, Grammar Challenge 1&2, and Ch. 14 Grammar Challenge 1&2.
  4. Note: You will have a midterm exam during Week 6. I’ll give you a review sheet next week.
Thursday, February 9, 2012:
  1. Reading: Read the science article that I gave to you in class, The Brittle Star’s Apprentice. Look up definitions for theunderlined phrases.
  2. Vocabulary: Quest book, pp. 128-130.
  3. Math: Look over the two handouts from The Wall Street Journal about currency rates from 2011 and 2012. Be prepared for a short activity related to currency conversions at the beginning of class on Tuesday.
Tuesday, February 7, 2012:
  1. Writing: Rewrite your essay that I returned to you today according to my edits. Resubmit it on Thursday with the original. Thus, you should turn in two essays on Thursday (the one with my pencil marks and your rewrite).
  2. Speaking: Expand today’s class survey. Interview 6 CELOP or BU students (using the same questions from today’s class about jobs). Write a short summary comparing all 12 answers that you gathered (our class + CELOP/BU students). Bring your summary to class on Thursday.
  3. Reading: Find an article about the global economy. Read the article and be prepared to paraphrase/summarize it (orally) in small groups on Thursday. Bonus (optional assignment): Find a listening to go with your article about the global economy.
Thursday, February 2, 2012:
  1. Grammar: Chapter 14, p. 275 B11 (b); and choose any 4 on-line activities to do from the Chapter 14 Internet section of your grammar book.
  2. Vocabulary: Please review the vocabulary words on today’s handout from class. We’ll be using these words next week in class. If you need to, then look up definitions for each word.
  3. Listening: Quest 3, Chapter 3, “Speaking Strategy” (p. 92) – Using Latin Terms. Listen to the terms, and then practice using the terms on p. 93 section B.
Tuesday, January 31, 2012:
  1. Project: Research your “Developing Nations” micro-finance/micro-credit program associated with today’s lesson. Prepare your poster board to be informally presented in class on Thursday. Make sure you find some time to meet with your partner so you can best collaborate on the project. If you need supplies, please see me in my office. This should be fun and creative!
  2. Grammar: Noun Clauses, p. 268 B2 and p. 269 B3.

Then you can use the class code (posted below) to join our High D EAP course. This is how you get credit for your grammar homework, so please finish all activities from Chapter 10 this week.

Note, the assignments should be two pages in length, which means using Times New Roman font, size 12 font, double spacing, and a title.
