About the Program

The summer of 2013 marks the beginning of the newest study abroad program at Boston University’s College of General Studies – the Social Sciences Summer Program in Shanghai.  Students who  participate in the program will study both modern Chinese history and Mandarin Chinese language at Fudan University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning.  The program will be challenging both in the classroom and outside of it;  students will grow to understand their surroundings in greater depth through a rigorous study of modern Chinese history, and through fast-paced and demanding language instruction.

The history course will be taught in English by members of the CGS faculty, and it focuses on revolution and modernization in China from the Opium Wars to the present.  For 2013, the course will be taught by Dr. John Mackey (see the “About Faculty” tab on this site).

The program is hosted and supported by the Boston University Shanghai staff, led by Dr. Andrew Field, Program Director.

Students need have no prior experience in Chinese language or history to participate in the program.
