FAQs

cropped-Capture.pngWhen are tryouts?
Tryout information will be posted on the “tryouts” page.

What should I expect at tryouts?
Tryouts will consist of learning and performing the BU Fight song dance, a BU sideline cheer, stunting, jumping, tumbling, and crowd-leading. Flyers will also be asked to demonstrate flexibility.

Is tumbling required to make the team?
Yes, tumbling is required to make the team. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of a back handspring to make White Squad and minimum of a back tuck to make Red Squad.

Can male cheerleaders try out?
Absolutely! Tryouts are open to both male and female applicants.

What is the cost to be on the team?
Team members are required to pay $200 in dues each year. BU Red Squad members are also responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Boston University for camp in Summer. All members are required to purchase their own uniform. During the school year, the team participates in various fundraisers to help offset the cost of nationals, gear, uniforms, and any new equipment.

How many members are chosen for the team?
The team has no member limit.

Is there a competition team and a game team?
Yes. Red Squad is our competition team and White Squad is our Game Day team. These teams are subject to change throughout the fall as the coaches sees fit. The game team members attend all games and game-related practices. Competition team members also cheer at games, practice regularly, and compete locally and nationally. In addition, the coaches may choose to take competition team alternates. These members would fulfill the same duties as the competition team members, but may not complete unless needed.

How often do we practice throughout the school year?
We practice 2-3 times a week, depending on the time of year. At BU we are considered to be student-athletes. A student-athlete is expected to have full commitment to their sport while maintaining the minimum academic GPA set by the coach. Nationals team members must be available during spring break and winter break for extra work week practices.

Do we practice over the summer?
No we do not, however optional team practices may be available for those living in the area. These will be for team members only and will be provided by the coach.
