BU Opens the 2013-2014 Season with a 5-3 Win at Home against UMass Amherst – 9/29/13
By Sean McCarthy
Coming off of a losing season in 2012-13, the Terriers opened up their 3rd official season as a University-affiliated team with a 5-3 victory over the University of Massachusetts Amherst. BU lost twice to UMass in the 2012-13 season (2-5 and 1-5), and were determined to open up the new year with a win at home. The Terriers put forth an aggressive offensive effort that generated five goals, including one Power Play goal and one empty-net goal. Despite a relentless offensive effort and a whopping 16 Power Play attempts from UMass, the Terriers were able to hold the Minutemen to three goals, due in large part to an impressive performance by Senior goaltender Justin Lundy, who stopped 45 of the 48 shots he faced throughout the game. Several first-year players stepped up for BU in their Club Hockey debuts, including freshman Center Riley Marotta (1G), and freshman defensemen Jack Faso (1A), Noah Friedman and Ben Messick. The rest of BU’s offense came from the sophomore class, with Matt Weintrob, Taylor Parkinson, Dillon Schuyler and Mike Gates (PP) all scoring goals. Although there were no serious injuries in the season opener, the Terriers lost a valuable player and teammate in sophomore Erich Schwabe after he suffered a broken ankle in practice last week. His recovery time has been estimated at 6-12 months. The Terriers will face off against NECHA Patriot East division rival Northeastern University next Saturday, 10/5/13, at 8pm at Walter Brown Arena. The Huskies will be returning many players from last year’s squad, which made an appearance at the ACHA Division II National Championships. BU went 0-1-1 against the Huskies last season, and will be striving for a critical win within their division.
