We want to thank all of our Alumni who came out for the Alumni Softball game and dinner this weekend. Everyone had a great time catching up with old friends and meeting the current team.

In game one of the softball series between the current players and the alumni, the current team won a pitching duel 2-1, but it was not to be outdone by the alumni in game two. A 8-2 victory sent the day into extra innings where after the current team got one run in the top of the inning, the Alumni walked off to a victory, keeping bragging rights for the year.

Thanks again to those who were able to make it to both the softball game and the Alumni Dinner. You are the one’s who keep the program alive to continue the tradition.

In one of their biggest tests over the past two seasons, the BU Baseball team spent three days on the road, trying to remain perfect. Game one was Friday night in Lynn, MA against a much improved Tufts ballclub. Freshman Josh Jason made his presence felt in his second start of the year tossing a complete game in a 5-2 Terrier victory. Rebounding from his first outing that lasted only three innings, Jason struck out 7 and kept Tufts in check all night. It was Junior Kevin O'Sullivan who tied the ballgame in the top of the sixth when the score was 2-1. The Terriers expanded their lead in the seventh and Jason finished them off with a 1-2-3 inning to seal the victory.

It was an early Sunday morning for the Terriers. Up to see the sun rise, BU made the trip to Jim Penders field in Manchester Connecticut for a 10am start to a doubleheader against Fairfield. Winning their division each of the past three seasons, Fairfield was looking for revenge against a Terrier team that ended their season with a loss last fall in the NECBA championship game. Game one was controlled by BU throughout, due mostly to Bowie Matteson's stellar performance on the mound. Giving up only two earned runs to a mighty Fairfield offense, Matteson was in control throughout, and let the Terrier offense explode. After stranding several runners in the first two innings, the Terriers unloaded in the later innings of the game. Never trailing, BU provided 13 runs led by Junior captain Jordan Kessel with 5 runs batted in, and Sophomore Ross Zamparelli with three hits and 4 RBI's.

Game two was much of the same with the Terriers winning an 8-3 ballgame. David Luna started and threw four strong innings, and O'Sullivan provided the relief with three scoreless, sealing the victory for the Terriers. In what was a much shorter doubleheader than last week, the BU baseball team left early and made the long trek home with the taste of victory and Red Potato Pizza still fresh.

BU will face rival Harvard this upcoming weekend at Harvard. Hopefully with a weakened roster due to the graduation of Stefan Botarelli, the Terriers will take advantage and sweep the doubleheader. Games start at 2pm.

It was a long day at Merrimack College, but the Terriers outlasted Merrimack and took both games of the doubleheader.

In Game 1 Bowie Matteson made his season debut on the mound striking out nine batter and leading the Terriers to a 14-6 victory. The game was close through the first 5 innings until the Terriers exploded for 4 in the 6th and 6 in the 7th.

Game 2 was a different story as this heavyweight fight lasted an extra round, going into extra innings. The game provided two Terriers their debut on the mound. Josh Jason and Danny Alter both made their season debuts on the mound. They struggled combining to give up ten runs over 3+ innings but this did not stop the Terrier offense. After Junior Kevin O'Sullivan entered the game and shut Merrimack down, the offense continued to produce scoring 11 runs in the first seven innings. After a misplay in the infield in the bottom of the 7th, the Terriers found themselves playing bonus baseball, and they decided that one inning would be enough. Scoring 7 runs in the top of the 8th put the Terriers on top for good, for a victory of 18-11.

In the season opener against Tufts, the Terriers started out with a slow start but ended up putting runs on the board in the 1st, 5th, and 6th innings, taking the opener 6-1. Sophomore David Luna got the opening day start, and threw five innings of three hit ball, giving up one run, striking out eight. Kevin O'Sullivan made his Terrier debut on the mound striking out four in his two scoreless innings of work.

Offensively the Terriers had a widespread attack with five different players scoring the six runs. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Lyne, in his first action coming off Tommy John surgery went 2-3 to lead the balanced attack. Sophomore Ross Zamparelli also had two hits including a double and a Run Batted In.

The 2012 NECBA schedule was recently announced and holding true to the rumors, there is indeed conference realignment. For the first time the Terriers will share a division with colleges other than Harvard, Tufts, and Emmanuel. Babson and Merrimack bring their always competitive program into the Central Division, hoping to take down the Terriers who have won at least eight games each of the past four seasons.

Babson has produced some memorable contests with the Terriers, most notably last season where after a 4-3 Terrier victory, the Babson faithful gave a mouthful to coach Jeff Border, "We have had some really competitive games with Babson in the past and it should be fun to continue this newfound rivalry every year now that they've joined the conference...When you are atop the standings as often as we are, it brings a new intensity to the regular season." The Terriers will battle with Babson later on in the season as the weather prevented their first first doubleheader.

Merrimack is an up-and-coming program in the New England Club Baseball Association, and have increased their win total each year since they entered the league in 2009. This weekend the Terriers will play kickoff weekend at Merrimack for their first doubleheader of the season.

BU will kick off the season on Saturday at Moakley Field, with a season opening battle against their pals, Tufts. The Terriers will again battle against Tufts in the Showcase one week from today, Friday September 21, at 7:30pm.

Two days later BU will spend a Sunday battling out of conference foe Fairfield who has won the South Division each of the past three years. BU has had Fairfield's number each of the past two seasons, beating them in the playoffs in both 2010 and in their championship victory last fall, a 10-5 win.

On the 30th of September, the Terriers will travel across the river to take on rival Harvard who will for the first time in what seems like decades will start an ace other than Stefan Botarelli. Harvard was the weak link in the chain last year for BU last year as they were the only team to defeat the Terriers between both the NECBA and ACBA.

The Terriers will finish their season with a doubleheader against conference foe Emmanuel. The New England weather is always changing to stay updated with the schedule here on the official BU Baseball website and on our twitter page @TerrierBaseball.

As the summer reaches its hottest days, the Boston University Club Baseball team has taken its first step towards defending its 2011 NECBA title. The team recently announced the two captains for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. Senior shortstop Jeremy Hartman and Junior catcher Jordan Kessel were voted by their teammates as the two captains for the Terriers.

"It's an honor to be in the same group as some of the great captains in BU's history," claimed Hartman. "I am definitely ready to take on the leadership role and make sure we defend our title this fall."

"It means a lot to have earned the respect of my teammates," stated Kessel. "It's really a payoff of how I play the game and I hope to make that intensity contagious this year."

Hartman hit .467 this spring in an offensive outburst that was a result of a strenuous off-season training program. He led the team in average along with his stellar glove at shortstop.

Kessel was named an NECBA All-Star in the fall hitting .471 with a team highs of 15RBI's and a .764 slugging percentage.

The Terriers have nine returning players and are expecting a stellar recruiting class this fall.

It was a year to be remembered but the Boston University Baseball Team fell short of capturing its second league title of the year, after losing to their rival across the river, Harvard. After finishing the regular season in the American Club Baseball Association at 6-1, the Terriers earned the top seed and a first round bye in the playoffs. Traveling up to The University of New Hampshire last weekend, the Terriers were poised for a long run in the playoffs, but the Crimson had other thoughts.

The only team to beat the Terriers this school year, Harvard was failed to be intimidated by NECBA MVP Andrew Kratzer and his fastball and for the first time all year, Kratzer struggled. He battled through 3+ innings giving up seven runs, five earned, striking out only two batters, a career low. "I just didn't have my best stuff today. It happens to all pitchers, and unfortunately today was the only day all year I didn't have it," Kratzer explained in a post game interview.

Drew Egan relieved Kratzer in the fourth giving up two runs, one earned over the course of the next four innings. Holding the Crimson at 9 runs, he gave the BU offense a chance to catch up. After sitting tight for two weeks, the explosive Terrier offense cooled off and it looked like the game was going to turn even uglier. Into the fifth inning the Terrier offense had managed only one hit, and had failed to score. After two Harvard errors, the Terriers finally got on the board in the fifth and took that momentum into the sixth inning. The Terriers scored five runs in the sixth, batting around, and making it a three run game.

Unfortunately, the BU offense did not have enough firepower to compete with the potent Harvard attack and the Terriers made an early trip back to Boston, losing with a final score of 9-6.

While this was not the ending that the Terriers were looking for, the team did have one of its most successful seasons ever, finishing with a 20-2 record for the fall/spring, with the two losses coming to the Crimson. This senior driven team was led by Ace Andrew Kratzer as he managed to rack up almost half of the Terriers wins. Senior southpaw Drew Egan was also a key piece in the pitching staff, winning the NECBA fireman's award for best reliever. The offensive attack was senior driven all year by NECBA offensive MVP Mike Robinson, NECBA All-Star Jay Godfrey, Ben Burkholder, Eli Corzier, and Matt Walsh, along with the occasional pop from pitcher/outfielder Drew Egan.

While the Terriers do say goodbye to one of the most successful senior classes to date, the rest of the ball club looks to rebuild for next fall to capture another NECBA championship. Bowie Matteson will take over as the Ace with his pinpoint control and sickening knuckleball. The pitching staff will also be anchored by sophomores Peter Zampa, Ross Zamparelli, David Luna, and will get a nice midseason addition when sophomore Stephen Lyne returns from Tommy John surgery.

The offensive attack will also be driven by underclassmen, the lone returning senior starter being shortstop Jeremy Hartman. Junior catcher and NECBA All-Star Jordan Kessel will provide the power for the lineup that will also be sophomore driven. The Terriers are finalists on the list of several recruits for next year, and they hope that the next freshman class will be the best yet, ready to contribute from day one.

After scoring a total of 5 runs in their first three games, the Boston University Baseball team finally woke up their bats as they put a pounding on the University of Vermont in the first game of their doubleheader last Saturday. Attribute it to the warmer weather or to the positive effects of Rasputen's, the BU offense unloaded on UVM to the tune of 14 runs, and took game one of the doubleheader 14-4. Senior Andrew Kratzer held the UVM offense down and let the Terriers cruise easily to their first ever win at UVM. Drew Egan came in relief and pitched two innings, giving up only one run and striking out four.

In game two it was all about the pitching as the Terriers showed their versatility. Bowie Matteson limited Vermont to only one run on four hits in a complete game. Sophomore Jordan Kessel scored on a past ball followed by Senior Outfielder Ben Burkholder scoring on a fielder's choice from Senior leadoff hitter Mike Robinson. It would be all the Terriers needed, and they drove home with their first sweep of the University of Vermont.

Less than 24 hours after sweeping the doubleheader, more than 200 miles away, the Terriers took the field again against Central Connecticut State. The day would prove to be an easy day as BU swept their second doubleheader in as many days, with wins of 16-8, and 18-2.

The Terriers next travel to American International College in Springfield MA, for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:1230.

When they took the field, the Boston University Baseball team had a feeling that they were in for a long night. At Breed field in Lynn, Massachusetts, they were set for their first battle with the Babson club baseball team.

The game was scoreless through the first two and a half innings, when the Terriers were able to strike first. In the top of the third, senior center-fielder Mike Robinson reached base with a walk and after and error and a fielder's choice came around to score.

In the top of the fourth, the Terriers gave the run right back after an error to the leadoff batter, and two singles back to back scored the leadoff runner and the game was again tied, this time at 1-1.

BU did not wait long to strike back, in the bottom of the inning, the Terriers had two men on with no outs and were threatening, until a base running error saw the lead runner go down. After senior captain Matt Walsh was walked, freshman designated hitter Jack Subasic put the Terriers ahead with a single to right field, scoring Hartman.

Kratzer then continued to mow down Beavers until the top of the seventh. With a 2-1 lead, Kratzer struck out the lead batter and after a walk and stolen base, Kratzer dealt with a man on second and one out, he then blew a fastball by the number nine batter and put the Terriers one out away from victory. After striking out the leadoff batter three times, Kratzer finally got beat as he stroked a single into centerfield and tied the game. Kratzer managed to get out of the inning after a hard line drive to converted middle infielder, Peter Zampa, in left field.

After failing to score in the bottom of the seventh, and with his pitch count well over 100, Kratzer took the mound again in extra innings. After two errors and a walk, the bases were loaded with no outs. A hard ground ball got past Jay Godfrey at third and scored the go ahead run, but that would be it for the Beavers in the eighth as Kratzer managed a fielder's choice, strikeout, and a ground ball to Bowie Matteson at second to end the inning.

The Terriers refused to die in the bottom of the eighth. After a ground ball out to start the inning, the Terriers made their final push. After a walk to Peter Zampa, sophomore catcher Jordan Kessel came up and knocked in Zampa from first with the game tying double. After an error on Babson's shortstop, it was Walsh who was up to bat and his ground ball up the middle scored Kessel and gave the Terriers the victory.

This was a significant win for the Terriers playoff hopes, given both the short season and quality of Babson's ballclub. The Terriers have the weekend off for Easter and hope to keep up their winning ways next week.
