BU IEEE is the combined “IEEE Student Chapter” and “IEEE-HKN Kappa Sigma Chapter” at Boston University

Overview

“BU IEEE Student Chapter” together with “BU IEEE-HKN Kappa Sigma Chapter” is called “BU IEEE” with Professor Min-Chang Lee as the current Faculty Advisor.  “BU IEEE Student Chapter” has been tied to IEEE Boston Section where Professor Lee serves as the Chair for “Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT)” and the Chair for “Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS) ” as well as a member on the “Professional Education and Development (PED) Committee”.  But, “BU IEEE-HKN” was originally evolved from “BU HKN”, which was established by Professor Lee in 2001, when HKN was created and managed by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).   After HKN became IEEE-HKN several years ago, Boston University’s HKN was reinstated as “Kappa Sigma Chapter of IEEE-HKN” in 2016.   Since 2016 the “BU IEEE-HKN and BU IEEE Student Chapter” have been combined and registered at Boston University’s Student Activities Office (SAO) as “BU IEEE Student Chapter/IEEE-HKN”.

BU IEEE Membership

BU IEEE Student Chapter offers General Membership to ECE Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.  The activities include invited lectures from outside speakers (including BU alumni/alumnae), workshops, social activities (e.g., welcome party), tutoring of ECE courses.   According to the guidelines from IEEE-HKN as an Honor Society (click on the website given below to see the IEEE-HKN operational manual), BU IEEE-HKN members need to meet the criteria, including their GPAs.   In other words, not all BU IEEE Student Chapter Members are automatically awarded the BU IEEE HKN Membership.   “BU IEEE Student Chapter/IEEE-HKN” has been supported financially by BU ECE Department to cover the costs of aforementioned activities in addition to the Induction Fees for BU IEEE-HKN members.
