Weekend Recap (11/2-11/3)

BU Roller Hockey traveled to Old Bethpage, NY last weekend for their second regular season tournament. Game one was a 9AM contest against Rutgers. The Terriers wished the game started a little later though as their sluggish start cost them the game. After the first period the Terriers were down 2-4 with Matt Sullivan and JP Weldon scoring the goals. A poor effort in the second period saw Rutgers scoring 3 more goals that put the Terriers in a 2-7 hole entering the final period. The team came out much stronger in the third, scoring two goals from Bill Schoeninger and Nick Breed in the first three and a half minutes. However, that was all the offense they could muster and the game would end 4-7 with Terriers on the losing side.

Game two was against nationally ranked #11 Farmingdale but the Terriers were more than ready to play as the underdogs. The Terriers were strong right out of the gate and scored two goals from Jordan Reinhardt and Ethan Shibutani in the first 48 seconds of play. However, halfway through the period, Nick Breed was assessed a five minute major checking penalty and game ejection. Farmingdale was able to capitalize on the ensuing powerplay and tied the game 2-2. They then scored a late period goal with 11 seconds left and the Terriers went into intermission down by one. Despite much back and forth play no goals were scored in the second period and the Terriers were still in a one goal hole entering the third.

Farmingdale scored three minutes in on a powerplay to go up by 2 but the Terriers weren’t ready to roll over. Jordan Reinhardt gave the team hope when he scored two minutes later to bring the team back within 1. Another two minutes later, the Terriers capitalized on a powerplay of their own when Matt Sullivan fed Tucker Franz a one timer in the slot. With 51 seconds left to play Jordan Reinhardt would score his third goal of the game, completing the hattrick, to give the Terriers a one goal lead. Unfortunately Farmingdale tied up the game just 24 seconds later and the game headed to 3-on-3 overtime. No goals were scored in the back and forth action so the contest would be decided in a shootout. Ethan Shibutani went first for the Terriers and missed but Mark Flitsch stopped the first Farmingdale shooter to keep things even. Matt Sullivan went second and scored five hole while Mark Flitsch turned away the second Farmingdale shooter. Tucker Franz was the third Terrier shooter and secured the victory by banging a shot post and in. Mark Flitsch had a whopping 44 saves in the contest as the Terriers came away with a 6-5 win.

The third and final game of the weekend was against a 3-0 Cortland team. In the first period Cortland scored the only goal on a powerplay and the Terriers were once again down one headed into the second period. However, they were able to tally a powerplay marker of their own in the second period when Matt Sullivan rocketed one by the Cortland keeper. Things were all tied up headed into the third but the Terriers started the period on a powerplay. Twenty six seconds into the period, Kevin Robitaille gave BU the lead off a shot on the rush. Four minutes later, JP Weldon added an insurance marker and that was all the team needed as they came away with a 3-1 win. Goalie Mark Flitsch was once again phenomenal, turning away 29 shots.

The team finished the weekend 2-1 and are now 5-2 overall. They are currently in first place in Division II with 10 points.
