After a long layoff, the Terriers started the second semester in Feasterville, PA this weekend. In the first game of the day they started off strong with a 9-3 victory over SUNY Albany. The line of Andrew Hanlon and Tucker Franz played exceptionally well, combining for 3 goals and 3 assists. After a few hours rest the team matched up against SUNY Binghamton, but fell short in a close 3-1 loss. Goaltender Mark Flitsch stood on his head, but Binghamton got a break when the game winning goal bounced in off a skate. In the final game against Cornell, there were defensive break downs left and right but goalie Andrew Todtenkopf came up strong when the Terriers needed it most. With six goals, BU was able to slip by Cornell and finish the weekend with a 2-1 record, putting them at 9-5 for the season with four games remaining. The team looks ahead to its final regular season tournament in two weeks on Long Island.

Mark Flitsch played in goal for the second period of the DI vs DII ECRHA All-Star game, giving up four goals in an offensive-oriented game. The Division I team won by a final score of 11-9.

As the second semester begins the team is preparing for its last two regular season tournaments in Feasterville, PA on February 2nd and on Long Island February 23rd and 24th. The team has had a productive season so far with a 7-4 record and is currently fighting for a place in the Regional Tournament. Currently ranked 24th in the nation for DII, the Terriers will be going up against Albany, Cornell, and UMass Amherst this weekend and hope to pick up six points before heading into the final regular season tournament of the year. Then in three weeks the team will match up against UMass Amherst on Long Island which is sure to have huge playoff implications. Also on the docket for Long Island are Cortland, Vermont, and Slippery Rock. After missing the playoffs each of the last two seasons by two points, the Terriers will be sure to stay focused until the final game. The Regional tournament is set for March 8th-10th. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for game-to-game updates.

Off the rink, the team participated in their second annual Movember charity event where they raised a total of $1,235 for men’s health.

The Terriers headed to Feasterville for the 2012 ECRHA All-Star weekend. Andrew Hanlon represented the Terriers in the All-Star game while Kevin Robitaille, Matt Sullivan and Steve Strohsahl joined him in the skills competition. While the Terrier All-Stars were knocked out of their competitions, they represented Boston University proudly.

The Terriers struggled in their regular season games as they finished with only one win and three losses. In the tournament opener, the Terriers lost 4-2 to division rival Vermont. The Terriers could never seem to get it going against the Catamounts, and their struggles continued against top-seeded Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh proved why they are the ECRHA’s top ranked team in the 9-3 Terrier loss. Despite the size of the loss, the Terriers gave a much better effort than they did against Vermont.

Saturday evening, BU took on the Cornell Big Red. The Terriers put in a good effort and took a 2-1 win even though the Terrier All-Stars were exhausted from a day at the rink. Freshman Mark Flitsch came up with 26 saves to earn the first star of the game in his first start, while Steve Strohsahl and Matt Sullivan contributed with goals. Mike Carpenter and Dan Sylvestre each had an assist in the Terrier win. The Terriers were not as fortunate in their Sunday game against rival UMass Amherst. BU lost a back and forth game 6-5. They will not have to wait long for another shot at the Minutemen as they play them in their next game.

Despite the disappointing weekend, the Terriers still control their own playoff destiny. If BU can beat Albany and either UMass or Northeastern, they will clinch at least the eighth seed in the ECRHA regional tournament.

Before settling down to Thanksgiving dinner, BU Roller hockey traveled to Old Bethpage, NY for four games. Boston did not wake up too well for their early morning first contest against Binghamton. The team battled, but came out on the wrong side of a 7-1 decision.

Game two against Millersville was a different story. Facing an understaffed Millersville squad, BU took out early morning frustrations in a 13-4 victory. Tucker Franz put up the first two goals of his BU career, finishing with 4 points in the game, Ethan Shibutani had a hat trick, and Kevin “Tall Kevin” Robitaille put up 7 points.

In game three, BU faced off against a Scranton team hungry to avenge a preseason loss. In a tight, back and forth, game, BU managed to come out on top with a 3-2 win. George Huber played well in the cage while Shibutani, Franz, and Terrier captain Steve Strohsahl all put the puck in the net. This was a big win against a team the Terriers are fighting for playoff positioning with.

For the Sunday morning game, the Terriers faced off against Queens College. BU fought from the get go against one of the league’s premier teams, eventually coming up short in a 4-1 loss after giving up 2 goals in the third. Despite the loss, the game proved that the Terriers can skate with the top teams in the ECRHA and will continue to fight for the playoffs.

Going into Winter Break, the Terriers are 6-5-0 with 12 points, good enough for 6th place in Division II’s field of fifteen. During the homestretch, it seems they will be battling UMass Amherst , SUNY Albany, and University of Delaware for positioning and the final three playoff spots.

Off the rink, the Terriers are getting involved in the community. BU Inline has raised almost $1,000 for prostate cancer awareness through their Movember campaign, and they will be involved with FitRec’s Toys-for-Tots.

Happy Holidays!

Over the last several months, a cloud has formed over the BU Roller hockey team. An issue threatened to work its way into the roots of the team and tear it apart from the inside. The root of this conflict is a simple question: Is Carp a fish? Those who said yes point to both his name (very fishlike indeed) and the fact that he was spawned in a Long Island pond. In the end however, the naysayers were proven correct in a Massachusetts district court. Citing his calves as evidence, Judge Romanda stated that Carp is, in fact, not a fish. “Fish do not have such tremendous legs.” Romanda said after the ruling, “It is a miracle that a non-fish was birthed in a pond, from an egg no less, but his non-fishness is confirmed.” Carp was pleased with the ruling, stating “I’m pretty pleased with the ruling.” “I’m just happy that we can put this whole issue behind us.” Though this would seem to be the end of the debate, the sides have shifted to new frontiers, including “Is Carp magic?” “Is Crap a suitable nickname?” and “What is Carp?” Carp sleeps soundly tonight knowing that he is not a fish, but the thunderous debates will inevitably lead to another round of late nights in the near future.
