FUEL CELL ELECTRODES

Unidym is raising CNT-based fuel cell electrodes to address near-term needs for powering moveable electronics and, longer term, to support possible markets linked with the energy financial system.

Fuel cell presentation is resolute approximately entirely by the performance of resources at the nanometer scale, with the main sources of fuel cell inefficiencies arising from kinetic, resistive and mass-transfer wounded. The use of thin nanotube networks as the base of fuel cell electrodes minimizes these inefficiencies and enhances presentation. In totaling, CNTs may decrease the amount of platinum means needed in the fuel cell, thus leading to potentially theatrical reductions in petroleum cell cost.

Unidym is developing its CNT-based fuel cell electrodes in collaboration with Johnson Matthey and Motorola. Recent prototypes outperform commercially available fuel cell electrodes. The company expects CNT-based fuel cell electrodes to initially be deployed in methanol fuel cells.

Teamwork

As the semester comes to a close and everyone is busy finishing up their projects, I had a thought.

And, well, this is why Olin stresses team-based projects in many, if not most of its classes. The idea is that by learning (suffering?) now, students will develop the teamwork and communication skills that industry tells us they so sorely lack. There is a huge discrepancy between the engineers in corporate environments who mostly work in teams, and undergraduate engineering students who traditionally focus on individual work and projects.

"Since my last blog entry, our country has experienced a great change. Whether you supported Barack Obama or John McCain, there is no denying that this was a momentous occasion. I missed being able to vote myself by a few months, but did accompany my mom, and pulled the lever– very exciting!"
