Legal Train(ing)

It is often said that with great power comes great responsibility.

I think that I would take it a step forward and say that the journey towards great power also necessarily comes with great responsibility.

Since my arrival at BU we have been told tons of times about how everything we do can have repercussions, and that we have to act like professionals in everything we do, including facebook.

While there is no doubt that this is true, I think it sort of takes us down a road other then the one I would choose if discussing the same thing.

For me the journey to becoming a lawyer and learning to think like one is very much like my adapting to not having a car, and having to get used to taking the B-Line, which is part of the green(e) line — a fact that I think is too good not to mention. How cool is it that I, as B Greene, live off of the B line of the Green Subway line?

But I digress…

Before we begin legal training, we all arrive here as just regular people with the same regular notions and compulsions as any one else. We have no idea where we are going or how this journey will change our lives and our thinking.

We are, as I was when I landed here in late August, stranded with no direction and no clue on how to navigate this new realm we are responsible for (or Boston, which is by far the most inconvenient place I have ever known… West Coast Bias…)

But as days and weeks go by certain things begin to become routine….

When I am taking a trip on the B Line to go somewhere with friends I have to always be cognizant of certain things, and I always have to have “you’re a law student, you’re a law student” in my mind as a precautionary thing to ensure that, should something occur, I am staying focused on the end goal (lawyer…advocate).

Just as I have to keep my eyes and ears focused on what stop I should be getting off on to make it to my destination.

Along the way you may or may not have some hiccups, you may or may not meet some unsavory characters, you may get behind and have to run to catch up, but as long as you are focused…you will get to where you need to go.

Law school can be a pain sometimes, but trust me when I say that legal training is way better than just train(ing) especially when it’s raining…

It hasn’t happened yet but I am sure that I will soon be navigating between legal topics with the same ease with which I navigate between the different train lines which make up the subway system of Boston…

This knowledge (like the train) will not arrive when I want it to, but arrive it will and I will be ready.

ALL ABOARD!!

Brandon,
You make a lot of great points. Your message could apply to many factors in life. No matter how you place it or where the result will be the same – when you are consistent things are bound to arrive the key is to be ready. It’s better to be prepared and not have an opportunity than to have an opportunity and not be prepared. Sounds familiar? Love the metaphors. Trish
