Persuasive Speech Topics (8 minutes)

It’s amazing how even when the same books are read again and again, we never find them boring. Each time is like the first time – the same excitement and interest. But speeches are different and people look for innovation and creativity.

Persuasive speech argues or puts across a point to the audience. It is the art of expressing an opinion clearly and logically.

While presentation is very important when persuading, the magic of a persuasive speech is best experienced only when the topic elicits an interest and appeals to the heart of every member in the audience. And, that is what finally matters.

One of the keys to preparing a successful presentation is finding the right topic. Oral presentations are typically informative or persuasive, so consider your format and goal as you brainstorm.

Persuasive presentations aim to convince people to change their mind, reaffirm their beliefs or take action. These work well in law, marketing and political science classes, as well as in courses that discuss disputable subjects.

Topics can be law-based, such as the need for gun control laws in light of recent US shootings. They can be political, arguing the benefits and drawbacks of Obama’s healthcare plan. They may also be social, suggesting that mass cell phone use has ironically enabled isolation.

Your goal should not be to “give a 10-minute presentation,” but to “engage the audience for ten minutes.” Consider your audience first, and then the things you know about, or are willing to learn about for this presentation. What do you think your audience would find interesting? What subjects are you interested in or excited about?

Certain drugs help cyclists ride faster and farther than normal by increasing the number of red blood cells in the body. While these drugs might help the athletes to perform better, there can be terrible side effects. In the year and a half before the 2004 Tour de France, nine professional cyclists died from overdoses of illegal drugs. Despite the danger, more and more cyclists are turning to these drugs to gain an advantage over their competition. It is unfortunate that these athletes value their races more than their lives. Race organizers have to be vigilant about this serious drug abuse.
