Roger Mantie’s research interests are located at the intersection of schooling, education, music education, personal and social well-being, and the philosophy and sociology of leisure. Published scholarship can be found in Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Canadian Music Educator, Canadian Winds, Critical Studies in Improvisation, International Journal of Community Music, International Journal of Music Education, Journal of Research in Music Education, Music Education Research, Philosophy of Music Education Review, and book chapters in Exploring Social Justice: How Music Education Might Matter (CMEA), Situating Inquiry: Expanded Venues for Music Education Research (Information Age Publishing), and Musicianship: Composing in Band and Orchestra (GIA Publications, in press).
Prior to his appointment at Boston University, Roger taught instrumental music in Manitoba, directed jazz ensembles and taught improvisation at Brandon University, directed jazz ensembles and taught saxophone and the University of Manitoba, directed the Royal Conservatory of Music Community School Jazz Ensemble in Toronto, and conducted the University of Toronto Hart House Symphonic Band.
