I will try to do it during next weekend, probably with another white flaky fish, because here in Italy the Tilapia is not so common and it’s very difficult to find.
Thanks a lot for always delivering tasty and wonderful looking and healthy recipes!

I think this has some great advice! I’ve found that although you might get teased for bringing something healthy to the party, it will be gone at the end when people get sick of the fat and sugar that they’ve been pigging out on.
Also, a lot of people like to get out and throw around a football during half time. Instead of watching the show – get out there and run around!

You’re right, there is too much focus on numbers, not just overall health. Unfortunately, numbers are engraved in the way we think. Why? Because numbers are goals, milestones. How old are you? How much money do you make? How tall are you? In sports, the greatest players are measured by the number of points they score, or number of championships they have won. It’s just the way we think.
BMI is another number we like to obsess over, the problem with it is that it does not discriminate between body fat and lean muscle mass.
Convenience is ease are two more factors. Standing on a scale if probably one of the easiest things you’ll ever do. Their also pretty convenient and easy to move.
In terms of ease, convenience and accuracy, the skinfold test is probably the best way for the average person to measure body fat. For some reason, it just hasn’t caught on yet.

This sounds like good advice to move people in the direction of a healthier diet, with no need for fretting over the small indulgences people are bound to continue. I especially like the point about “Focus on health, not weight”.
I’ve found if I feel good after a meal or snack, that was a healthy choice of food. We need to learn, IMHO, to notice the lighter, more energetic response we get from eating healthy unprocessed foods. It really makes a difference over the course of a lifetime.

You know what? That is a killer recipe for Gazpacho! I make it all the time in the hot Southwestern summers that I live in here in my home state. I usually make it the standard way and it is red. I use the standard recipe to make something I call Mexican Shrimp Cocktail to and my friends and family love it, but this yellow version looks really good! The addition of Almonds, I bet that adds a nice little crunch. I usually don’t use Vidalias but rather red onions, but I think this weekend I might just give this recipe a try. I just learned a thing or two! Great Recipe!
Thanks!

Hey Kelli!
Completely agree. I really started disliking buttered popcorn when I was like 14. At first, keeping away from these types of foods like the giant buckets of soda and king sized candy bars is hard to do but eventually I’ve found that your body adjusts so that you no longer want to eat this stuff. I’m not a big fan of soda anymore which means a lot less calories and high fructose corn syrup…gross
Huge fan of coconut water and trail mix at the theater…Now just gotta sneak in food to the theater…Also, I will definitely try out that Cinnamon popcorn. Sounds awesome!

Learn to give your body what it’s asking for to maintain your health and it’ll give you the attractive body that is your birthright. It’s only natural!
Besides, most of what those who are uhhappily overweight are focusing on is their unhappiness causing superfluous subcutaneous pounds, not their ideal body, and we always seem to get what we focus on in this life.

Focus on health and not weight is one of the biggest issues I face with my clients as they usually only look to the scale for results rather then a mirror or photos, but as you mention, you can lift weight, put on muscle and lose fat and the results are stunning. What I find interesting though, even though my clients notice a major difference in their body shape, they still will feel unsatisfied if they didn’t lose enough weight. Hopefully some time we will be able to get past the idea of only losing weight and get people to realize it’s the health, where the adipose tissues resides, and their overall health that matters, not some arbitrary number on a scale.

I’m not a doctor, just a guy who lost 62 lbs since last January. It has been one of the biggest struggles of my life, but my focus has always been on getting healthy and not on the numbers. I lost the weight by combining diet and exercise and now all of my health issues are under control. I don’t have heartburn, sleep apnea, and acid reflux. My blood pressure went down to normal, and my diabetic numbers are in the normal range. Not to mention I feel better, fit into smaller clothes, get lots of attention from others, can leap tall buildings in a single bound… well maybe not that last part. But now I have relief from being the fat guy… and that feels good.

I’s a shame that oftentimes people need a health crisis to make them realize that they need to focus on health rather than weight. Cancer was my trigger – and only after that I really focused on 5 serves of veges a day and drinking lots of water. When you WANT to keep healthy it’s much easier to think about treating your body well.
Sarah@Future Buildings posted on September 27, 2011 at 9:21 am
I don’t necessarily agree with the ‘love your body’ regardless of what it is philosophy. While I’m no doubt completely against any negative comments or attitudes being made about peoples physical conditions, the fact is obesity is unhealthy.
By being significantly overweight you’re doing damage to your body when you could be exercising and eating correctly to make a change and get healthy. The same is true of those who go overboard and don’t eat enough.
Self esteem is often the underlying contributing factor in these situations. I know my body isn’t perfect and I don’t ‘love it’ but I realize that it’s a very small part of who I am and as a result I don’t care if there are flaws. What I do care about is if I’m unhealthy and have less life to live with my loved ones.
simon posted on September 27, 2011 at 5:00 pm
the 90/10 rule is absolutely crucial to finish any diet. You need room to endulge yourself. This doesn’t mean it has to be fatty foods, just anything you love eating. It keeps you going when you hit a rough spot and are having a difficult day.

Home cooked food is best, you control what it’s made from and know that the ingredients are fresh.

These are all very good tips! Thanks for the blog tip.
I used to take care of old people in their homes who needed help with their daily chores, or who were at their last stage of their lives.
I had quite some who were over 90, so I always asked them what their secret was.
They told me:
- Eat in moderation, with pleasure.
- Do some kind of exercise on a daily bases.
- Smile, be happy, view life with a positive mental attitude.
(all of those I knew had to endure the second world war, some the first as well, and there were some who survived a concentration camp, and still they had a positive mental attitude!)

A healthy eating plan is a comprehensive program for improving your health by improving the quality of the foods you eat. Rather than focusing on the restriction or elimination of foods from your life, an eating program educates you about how foods impact your body so that you can make a learned choice when it comes to breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

There are sooooo many benefits to eating healthily and doing exercise. However, I do feel that the best way to keep fit and lose weight that you want to lose is to just eat more fruit and vegetables and eat less of the bad stuff.
If you’re not a fan of fruits and vegetables, then give smoothies a go to see if that is the best way, for you, to get the good stuff into your system.

Only a lifestyle change and a return to a healthy diet consisting in fresh fruit and vegetables will protect us from obesity related diseases.

I love the psychological approach to eating healthfully. It’s not an all or nothing lifestyle where your entire diet is healthy with no room for treats. To deny yourself something you love will surely be your downfall. I believe the best way to begin living a healthy diet lifestyle is to begin gradually and add in foods you love. Knowing you are eating well for you is a good incentive to continue. I will come back for more…most definitely.

Thank you! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the blog. Choosing a platform really depends on your comfort level with HTML codes. A free platform like wordpress will require some previous knowledge or have you searching for codes on Google, but it can definitely be done! Blogger is a bit more user-friendly, but doesn’t always look quite as professional as Wordpress. If you’re willing to spend the money and don’t want to worry about becoming a pro at web design, then the paid option would be good. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Broccoli is probably one of my favorite vegetables. Usually when I’m hungry in the weird afternoon hours of 3 or 4 after my classes, i make a quick little and healthy veggie snack- steamed broccoli with soy sauce and lime.
I usually put a handful of frozen broccoli in a bowl . I use the frozen stuff since it’s pretty cheap (about a dollar a bag from Shaws) and it can be stored in my dormroom microfridge for a while. Then I wet a paper towel, squeeze out the excess water and place it over the bowl. Then I put the bowl in the microwave and set the timer for 3-4 minutes. This is kinda my makeshift way of steaming brocolli… Once it’s hot and steamed, I add about a tsp of low sodium soy sauce and a spritz of lime. The product is a tangy and tasty broccolli snack!

Hi,
It’s definitely true that right eating combined with correct holistic exercise is the way to go.
I personally became 100% vegetarian a few years ago, and gradually transitioned to making water my main drink for the day (aiming for about 8 classes a day).
Regular exercise was something that eluded me for many years, until I finally figured out that it was the thing I had to do FIRST in the day, before anything else. Following the Tony Robbins Hour Of Power system each morning helped a lot in this, and gradually the discipline took hold.
Yoga is an excellent form of exercise for body, mind and spirit. The purist yogi is definitely a vegetarian too. Hatha yoga is excellent for health, and of course everyone knows where to get classes in that. What is less well known is that Tibetan yoga, known as the yoga of movement, is also an outstanding system and well worth considering.

I’m a big believer in the 90%-10% rule and focusing on health an not weight. I used to get migraines 4-5 time a year. Over the last year, I’ve cut out most fast food and started eating breakfast every morning. Since changing my habits, I’ve only had 2 migraines which we due to my other triggers (light and smell). Just today, I avoided the donuts that someone brought into the office.

I have to agree with the 90/10% rule. If you focus too much on what you can not have, you will eventually give up and splurge on it. Knowing that you can have anything you want at some point in your week helps you to stay on your target and not over-indulge on the unhealthy.

Finding a healthy breakfast cereal can definitely be tricky, especially with all the misleading health claims you find on packages these days. I tend to like All Bran Bran Buds because it’s extremely high in fiber. It has more sugar than I would prefer, at 8 grams per serving, but I just add a little fat and protein to my breakfast, usually eggs, to lessen the glycemic impact. I really like your peanut butter idea, so I’m going to have to try that.

My late wife was skinny growing up, and then lost control. She tried really hard, but never found the right key. I know it was hard for her Leo personality to be heavy.

Great Post!
As a fitness fanatic, a healthy diet is essential. Although I prefer not to call it diet as that implies it is a temporary thing that may end, I prefer to say nutrition. Anyway eating right is much more important in staying healthy than exercise itself! (Although that doesn’t hurt either). I will use the advice on this website to create new recipes for myself and also to put on my blog! Very interesting and great information.

Quit smoking, lose 40lbs,exercise, eat more balanced meals (I already eat pretty healthy) Drink more water, study every night (in grad school currently), spend some time on hobbies (jewelry making mostly), wake up and go to bed at set times and of course spend more quality time with my husband (not just being bums watching tv). Please don’t say “just do it” I clearly have thought of that myself.

I love the new food movement the US is currently going through. Instead of ‘dont eat this’ ‘don’t eat that’ (negative) we’re saying ‘this food is super good for you and super tasty, eat this!’ I hope this continues to take on. Our obesity rates would definitely drop if we focused on what we can eat instead of what we can’t. Love your post!

Good post Elizabeth,
In fact one of the points that you mentioned is very important and that is not to concentrate on losing weight too much. Building a healthy body involves exercising, which include building muscles most of the time. Muscles do have weight but you can consider it as healthy weight.
What we should be looking for is body composition, i.e. fat versus muscles. What should be important to every dieter is fat loss and not weight loss.

These are all positive initiatives, but there should be many more, and I believe that schools and especially the media should be playing a central role. A very simple suggestion: Why not ban advertisements of sweets and fattening products during kids’ television time? All we see nowadays is soft-drinks, Hamburger eat-outs, etc. etc. We should all guard our kids’s lives. They deserve a healthy and happy life! Healthy food is just one of the means to get there!

The balanced approach to healthy food and treats is spot on actually. Many people tend to believe that eating healthy means never eating anything they like. A balanced diet, combined with regular physical exercise is key. Hope more and more bloggers realize the importance of a balance between health and joy.
After all, only a balanced approach can be sustained. A diet deprived of all the foods you love simply cannot be sustained for long.

Thank you for this post. This is one of my favorite topics, because by swapping your daily snacks (chocolate bars, chips, etc.) with a fruit or some vegetables, you could make large improvement into your total well being. As you’ve said, fruits and vegetables are sources of vital nutrients, and different colored fruits and veggies equals to large variety of vitamins and minerals, which the body requires for optimal physiological function and health.
Also an easy way to combine great variety of fruits and vegetables, is by making fresh juices and smoothies. This is especially good for vegetable juices, because they are very low in calories, which would not add up to the daily calorie intake, if consumed at larger quantities. But of course, in terms of nutrition, everything should be in moderation.
As for the list of red vegetables I could add radish, red cabbage and beet, although the last two are more likely to belong to the purple vegetables group.

Talking about cookbooks, one thing that used to really bug me with cookbooks was that they would look great but I would find it difficult to find lots of things to cook because there were so many ingredients that I wouldn’t normally buy.
I found the remedy was to find one or two recipes that I could cook easily, then I would consider the book a success. After those one or two I could then be more adventurous with the recipes I tried.
