Fall semester was a great success for BU SHPE.

We saw old members and met new ones at Splash! on Nickerson Field in August.

Along with other Latino student organizations, we attended the Latino Students Welcome Reception at the Howard Thurman Center- what great food!

We worked closely with the ENG Career Development Office to put on a Resume and Cover Letter Writing Workshop followed by an Interviewing and Networking Skills Workshop. Both of these events led up to the SHPE National Conference in Washington, D.C.

BU SHPE was able to send 15 members to the conference held October 28- November 1,2009. The conference featured workshops, presentations, networking opportunities, and a very large career fair (resulting in internships for some of our members)!

After the excitement of the conference settled, SHPE stayed strong through the end of the semester, participating in an outreach project with Upward Bound- “Science Saturdays” for high school students- and hosting an informational presentation from the internship program INROADS. The INROADS event was attended by students of many disciplines, nearly filling the entire room!

Beyond our events on campus, we worked to improve the relationship with the local professional chapter. They hold monthly events which are a great way to meet and network with local professionals.

Thanks to the dedication of the professional chapter’s outreach coordinator Antonio De La Serna, and BU SHPE’s secretary Mary Louise Fowler, SHPE was able to begin our very own outreach program with a local high school. This program is in full swing and we are looking for volunteers interested in developing activities and/or volunteering on-site up to twice a month.

Stay tuned for more updates from BU SHPE and please feel free to contact us at shpe@bu.edu to get involved

Clara De Paolis, BU SHPE President 2009-2010

Welcome (back) to BU and to another year of SHPE. Since last May, the SHPE officers have been working hard to plan for this year and make it the best one yet! We’ve got a great group as the e-board, but we thrive on the enthusiasm and involvement of all of our members. More than ever before, we are calling out to all SHPE members to join us to achieve new heights.

It’s a great time to be part of the SHPE familia. On the national level, new leadership have set forth great goal for the organization and have exciting plans to move forward. Locally, the Boston professional chapter has begun redefining itself and promises to make great progress as a chapter, especially as it strives to build stronger relationships with the local student chapters. At Boston University, we are lucky to be facing a year of tremendous potential for growth and improvement. Our ability to fulfill our potential as a chapter and as an organization begins with our members. We are at a defining moment in our chapter and need the support and continued enthusiasm of our members to move forward.

This year BU SHPE is all about building connections. The community around us, on and off campus, is full of things to offer. As we expand our reach to students- within and external to the Hispanic community, inside the College of Engineering and all STEM fields, undergraduate and graduate- we will be working to connect with other student groups at BU, other student SHPE chapters, professionals, our regional and national SHPE leadership, and our community.

Join us in our mission! Stay tuned for upcoming events and opportunities.

Thank you for your support, we look forward to welcoming you to our new-and-improved SHPE!

Sincerely,

Clara De Paolis, BU SHPE President 2009-2010

And all of the BU SHPE e-board- shpe@bu.edu
