<p>We also briefly discussed the <a href="http://www.bu.edu/campaign/students/competition/">Battle for BU</a> (thanks to Ryan Bersani for explaining it to us), and <a href="http://www.spredfast.com/">Spredfast</a>, which is currently being used by PR, the Dean of Students office, Admissions and Alumni Relations.</p>
<p>Finally, we reviewed a web timeline of communications sent out from the University during the week of the Boston Marathon. <p>The Social Media Communicators welcomed two representatives from Google Plus to campus for a presentation of the network on Tuesday, June 12. The team provided a walk-through of the basics of Google Plus, and provided some food for thought on how higher education communicators might be able to use it for their benefit. Five key takeaways from the afternoon: <strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>- Google is aiming to integrate many of its existing tools directly into Plus. </strong>Plus will eventually become what Google calls &#8220;The Social Spine&#8221; of its products. The ability to share with others and interact socially will be available through Plus for documents, photos and photo editing, games, events and more.<strong> </strong> <strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>- Circles can be an effective marketing tool. </strong>Not only can you curate circles of alumni, students, media and other focused groups to target with messaging, circles can also be shared with others to boost followership. For example, a school&#8217;s page could share a circle of key publications it recommends its students keep updated with. A professor could also create a circle of students in his or her class, and then share the circle so that everyone could connect with each other.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>- Hangouts are a key advantage for Plus, and can be used for one-on-one and one-to-many. </strong>From a professor using a Hangout for virtual office hours, to a Hangout on Air, broadcast live on YouTube to showcase a campus event<strong>,</strong> Hangouts can be used for many different applications. <strong></strong></p>
<p><span id="more-427"></span><br />
<strong>- Plus activity affects search. </strong>Google&#8217;s &#8220;Search Plus Your World&#8221; makes Google Plus an integral part of more personalized search. Participation in Google Plus provides an advantage when someone searches for your department or institution, and can connect with you directly.<strong></strong> <strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>- Providing social context with Plus can also affect your AdWords campaigns. </strong>Google Plus <a href="http://support.google.com/adwords/bin/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=1722132">page endorsements and campaign extensions</a>, according to the representatives who spoke with us, can have a positive impact on click-through rates of AdWords campaigns. If you use AdWords, this is something to consider.<strong><br />
</strong></p>

<p><strong>Pinterest</strong></p>
<p>As Pinterest membership continues to grow, some SMC members have asked if it will work for their marketing efforts. Among the BU communicators adopting Pinterest:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Dean of Students</strong>: Kat Hasenauer pointed us to <a title="Kenneth Elmore's Pinterest" href="http://pinterest.com/bostonudos/">Kenn Elmore&#8217;s page</a>, which will be used during orientation to curate the presentation topics on the fly. Each presenter will be &#8220;pinned&#8221; with their name, office, and one key takeaway: &#8220;My advice to you as a freshman.&#8221;</li>
<li><strong>Student Activities Office:</strong> Melissa Grove helps to curate <a title="SAOBU on Pinterest" href="http://pinterest.com/saobu/">SAO&#8217;s Pinterest account</a> as a resource for students. Boards help students with event planning and ideas, as well as fun boards like<a href="http://pinterest.com/saobu/we-love-scarlet/"> &#8220;We Love Scarlet.&#8221;</a> They are also following other schools to see how they&#8217;re using the tool. They plan to increase their efforts on the platform over the summer with the help of student workers.</li>
<li><strong>College of Communication: </strong>Though <a href="http://pinterest.com/bucommunication/">COM&#8217;s Pinterest</a> may soon be targeted to only the Photojournalism program, Paul Kresge admitted that they wanted to experiment with the platform because &#8220;it was there and it was something new&#8221; (a sentiment that felt common across the room). Paul also <a title="comugrad on Springpad" href="http://springpad.com/#!/comugrad">pointed to their Springpad account</a>, recently set up by the company&#8217;s ambassadors, which pulls in richer data, including Google Maps and Yelp reviews, which may make guides for students more useful.</li>
</ul>
<p>Overall, the feeling about Pinterest seemed to be 1) it&#8217;s caught our attention because of the user base growth &amp; news, 2) it may not be a tool for every department, but it&#8217;s worth experimenting with for now, and 3) the best use case so far seems to be to provide useful information &amp; guides for students. One person pointed to <a href="http://pinterest.com/drakeuniversity/">Drake University&#8217;s Pinterest</a> as a great example of a higher ed institution using the tool well.</p>
<p><span id="more-409"></span></p>
<p><strong>Class of 2016</strong></p>
<p>Gordon Ryan, Admissions&#8217; new Digital &amp; Social Media Marketing Manager, spoke briefly about the Class of 2016&#8242;s reaction to admissions decisions on March 24. Using <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/applytobu">@ApplytoBU</a>, Gordon estimates he responded to over 500 students with tweets of congratulations (dashing the myth that high school students aren&#8217;t on Twitter). He also mentioned that the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/BU2016">Class of 2016 Facebook page</a> jumped from about 500 members (from Early Decision) to over 3,000. The page now has nearly 3,800 fans (for a class of 3,900, a significant participation rate). Gordon estimates that about 10 percent of their website visits during that week came from social media referrals, and every post they put up receives between 500-2,000 engagements (clicks, etc).</p>
<p>Individual schools are experimenting with social engagement for their new fall class, too. The School of Public Health will be piloting a Yammer group for one class, and possibly a Facebook group for another at the same time. The College of Communication also has established a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/BUCOMClassof2016">Facebook page</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/bucom2016">Twitter account</a> for its freshman class.</p>
<p><strong>Facebook</strong></p>
<p>A few new features of Facebook were discussed in brief, namely the new &#8220;Groups at Universities&#8221; functionality that <a href="http://www.facebook.com/groups/groupsatbostonuniversity/">Boston University is a part of</a>. Current BU Facebook administrators have no control over the activity here (no &#8220;superadmin&#8221; capabilities), and pages are not listed here, nor pre-existing groups. For now, it is likely a listening tool for connecting with students, but if SMCers find other uses for it down the road, please let us know.</p>
<p>The new &#8220;messages&#8221; capability for Pages was also mentioned as an aside. This can be turned on or off, but can serve as a way for fans to ask questions that they may not want to post on the Page&#8217;s wall.</p>

<p><strong>CAS Presents</strong></p>
<p>Jeremy Schwab presented the latest campaign from the College of Arts &amp; Sciences, a series of faculty expert videos dubbed &#8220;CAS Presents.&#8221; He showcased one, &#8220;Why is Modeling a Bad Job?&#8221; featuring sociology professor Ashley Mears:</p>

<p>On December 6, the Social Media Communicators met to discuss the use of QR codes, the emergence of Google+, and techniques for managing social media channels. The Public Relations team unveiled their new website, which includes a social media directory for schools, departments, and student groups.</p>
<p><strong>Social Media Directory</strong></p>
<p>Tom Testa, AVP of Public Relations, presented the new <a title="Boston University Public Relations" href="http://www.bu.edu/news" target="_blank">PR website</a>, designed to house comprehensive <a title="faculty profiles" href="http://www.bu.edu/news/faculty-experts/" target="_blank">faculty profiles</a>, <a title="news releases" href="http://www.bu.edu/news/releases/" target="_blank">news releases</a> and a <a title="directory of Boston University social media channels" href="http://www.bu.edu/news/social-media-and-blogs/" target="_blank">directory of Boston University social media channels</a>, among other services. Communicators should contact<a title="e-mail Mary Tunney" href="mailto:mtunney@bu.edu" target="_blank"> Mary Tunney</a> to list their accounts.</p>
<p><span id="more-388"></span></p>
<p><strong>QR Codes</strong></p>
<p>While a few groups have tried using QR codes, including the <a title="Dean of Students office" href="http://www.bu.edu/dos" target="_blank">Dean of Students office</a> and the <a title="School of Medicine Alumni Association" href="http://www.bumc.bu.edu/medalumni/" target="_blank">School of Medicine Alumni Association</a>, the conclusion seems to be that while the technology is interesting, there are pitfalls and barriers to use. Kat Hasenauer of DOS explained that many students did not seem to understand how they work, or that they needed additional software on their phones to read them. She also mentioned that several students still have old-fashioned flip phones, which cannot read QR codes at all. One communicator suggested that directions on how to use a QR code should be included on the marketing materials where the code is being used. Scott Dasse of Interactive Design suggests <a title="Do QR codes work? Depends on how you use them" href="http://www.examiner.com/advertising-in-richmond/do-qr-codes-work-depends-on-how-you-use-them" target="_blank">this article on QR code adoption and use</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Google+</strong></p>
<p>Since we recently launched the <a title="Boston University Google+ page" href="https://plus.google.com/#108102556992605130364/posts" target="_blank">Boston University Google+ page</a>, we wanted to ask about other communicators&#8217; experience with the platform. Only a couple of departments mentioned their plans to use it, and opinions of it were mixed. Raul Fernandez of the <a title="Howard Thurman Center" href="http://www.bu.edu/thurman" target="_blank">Howard Thurman Center</a> asserted that it&#8217;s yet another platform to maintain, but if the audience is there, he would support its integration into their strategy. By many accounts, the most powerful thing about Google+ is the role it plays in search. Ryan Bersani of <a title="Online Giving (DAR)" href="http://www.bu.edu/alumni/support/" target="_blank">Online Giving</a> praised it for its customizable privacy settings, while others expressed concern that their privacy would be compromised in ways they did not explicitly allow.</p>
<p>Andrea Little from the <a title="School of Management" href="http://management.bu.edu" target="_blank">School of Management</a> said that they had been considering using the Google+ Hangouts functionality with their Admissions team. (Since the meeting, the Dean of Students office <a title="Dean of Students hosts a Google Hangout" href="http://www.bu.edu/buniverse/view/?v=1suhvhr5" target="_blank">has hosted a Hangout</a> with Cecilia Lalama in the Educational Resource Center.) It seems that currently, Google+ adoption is a phase of experimentation. A few things to keep in mind:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Reserving your Google+ page means it will go live immediately.</strong> Unlike Facebook, the page will go live immediately.</li>
<li><strong>Pages are currently limited to one administrator</strong> and ownership is not transferable. But according to recent news, <a title="Google+ Brand Page Multi-Admin Capability Coming Soon (Mashable)" href="http://mashable.com/2011/11/30/google-brand-page-multi-admin/" target="_blank">this should change soon</a>.</li>
<li><a title="HootSuite Google+ Integration" href="http://blog.hootsuite.com/google-plus/" target="_blank"><strong>Tools like HootSuite are beginning to enable cross-posting</strong> <strong>to Google+</strong></a>, as well as Facebook and Twitter, to aid with time management and consistency across platforms.</li>
</ul>
<p>Since Tuesday&#8217;s meeting, BU was featured with Emerson and Harvard in a <a title="BostInnovation: Why Colleges Should Be Creating a Google+ Page Right Now" href="http://bostinno.com/2011/12/09/why-colleges-should-be-creating-a-google-page-right-now/" target="_blank">BostInnovation piece on higher ed adoption of Google Plus</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Time Management</strong></p>
<p>Finally, the group discussed time management. How are departments managing their platforms, and the messaging across them? Robert Flynn of <a title="Dining Services" href="http://bostinno.com/2011/12/09/why-colleges-should-be-creating-a-google-page-right-now/" target="_blank">Dining Services</a> said that he is maintaining all of their platforms on his own, and that until it is no longer feasible, he would prefer it that way, citing concerns of maintaining a consistent voice. Other teams, including the <a title="College of Arts and Sciences" href="http://www.bu.edu/cas" target="_blank">College of Arts and Sciences</a>, the <a title="School of Public Health" href="http://sph.bu.edu/" target="_blank">School of Public Health</a>, and <a title="Admissions" href="http://www.bu.edu/admissions" target="_blank">Admissions</a> have taken a team approach, designating different employees and schedules for social media management. Kelsey Labrot of the Howard Thurman Center suggested a few tools to help with scheduling posts, including <a title="CoTweet" href="http://cotweet.com/" target="_blank">CoTweet</a> and <a title="Tweue" href="http://tweue.com/" target="_blank">Tweue</a>.</p>

Based on questions that came in beforehand, we focused first on blogs and then on location-based services, and then opened up the floor for a broader discussion.</p>
<p>We asked attendees about progression of their blogging efforts, and the sentiment from many was that groups are moving away from blogging due to time constraints and management. BU Dining Services said <a href="http://budiningservice.tumblr.com" title="BU Dining Services on Tumblr">they had recently taken to Tumblr</a>, as it easily allows them to post pictures and other shorter pieces of content. Admissions brought up <a title="Boston University Admissions blog" href="http://blogs.bu.edu/admissions/" target="_blank">their new blog</a>, which allows them a way to provide more information to prospective students. PR mentioned that one of their latest blogs, <a title="Professor Voices" href="http://www.bu.edu/professorvoices" target="_blank">Professor Voices</a>, had been migrated from <a title="blogs.bu.edu" href="http://blogs.bu.edu" target="_blank">blogs.bu.edu</a> to a new BU WordPress site.</p>
<p><span id="more-366"></span><br />
Kat Cornetta of the Dean of Students office advised that departmental blogs, rather than being made separate entities on blogs.bu.edu, can be integrated into BU WordPress websites by:</p>
<ul>
<li>Creating blog posts in “News”</li>
<li>Assigning each post to a category, which is the blog’s name</li>
<li>Adding the category to the site’s main navigation</li>
</ul>
<p>By creating multiple categories, you can create multiple “blogs,” which are simply subsections of your website.</p>
<p>Next, we discussed location-based services like <a title="Foursquare" href="http://foursquare.com" target="_blank">Foursquare</a>, and though some groups expressed interest in using it, no one seemed to have solid strategies yet. An example was brought up about using the Foursquare “Lists” feature to compile recurring features, like BU Today’s <a title="Nearby Neighborhoods" href="http://www.bu.edu/today/nearby-neighborhoods/" target="_blank">“Nearby Neighborhoods”</a> or <a title="Lunch Anyone?" href="http://www.bu.edu/today/lunch-anyone/" target="_blank">“Lunch Anyone?”</a> series, to repurpose content and drive Foursquare users back to BU sites.</p>
<p>Other technical discussions followed, including:</p>
<ul>
<li>Embedding playable <a title="Vimeo" href="http://vimeo.com" target="_blank">Vimeo</a> clips on Facebook pages</li>
<li>Reserving Foursquare venues and adding venue managers</li>
<li>The inability to create LinkedIn sub-pages (currently limited to <a title="Boston University on LinkedIn" href="http://www.linkedin.com/company/boston-university" target="_blank">one main company page for Boston University</a>, per LinkedIn’s guidelines)</li>
</ul>
<p>We also shared a link to a Google Doc for all Social Media Communicators to post events that need cross-promotion. If you still need this link, please send us an e-mail.</p>

<p>Michael DeFillippis (COM&#8217;13) came to the meeting to speak on behalf of his teammates (Alex Shuck and Rachel Sprung) and their experience with the <a title="SCVNGR Beantown Challenge" href="http://beantown.scvngr.com/" target="_blank">SCVNGR Beantown Challenge</a>. From February 7th through the 14th, the Boston University community was invited to participate in various challenges at campus locations (the GSU, Warren Towers, SMG) for points and prizes. For the campaign, they:</p>
<ul>
<li>Created a <a title="BUSCVNGR Facebook Event Page" href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=164509116930478" target="_blank">Facebook event page</a></li>
<li>Enlisted the help of 17 &#8220;student ambassadors&#8221; from the Dean of Students office, who helped to spread the word</li>
<li>Launched a <a title="Facebook Fan Page: Dean Kenn Elmore" href="http://www.facebook.com/deankennelmore" target="_blank">fan page for Dean Elmore</a></li>
<li>Created an initial batch of 15 challenges</li>
<li>Used <a title="#BUSCVNGR" href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23BUSCVNGR" target="_blank">#BUSCVNGR</a> to spread the word on Twitter</li>
</ul>
<p>During the campaign:</p>
<ul>
<li>113 participants played (this number does not include the team or ambassadors)</li>
<li>An average of 22 challenges were completed per person</li>
<li>New challenges were rolled out to keep up with the demand of new games</li>
</ul>

<p>Some limitations of the tool include: iPhone and Android support only (if the challenges are connected into treks, SMS-capable phones can play, too). Limited backend functionality, including analytics (exportable views of participants, freeform text entries for challenges). There was also some confusion on challenge resets, which allow participants to do the same challenge for more points after an hour has passed.</p>

<p>Raul Fernandez of the Howard Thurman Center presented on the efforts of the <a title="BU Culture Shock" href="http://bucultureshock.com/" target="_blank">BU Culture Shock</a> blog, a student-run operation with roughly 30 staff members (contributors and four editorial). The blog recently celebrated its first birthday, and has seen tremendous growth &#8212; in strategy, traffic and working knowledge. Some brief highlights:</p>
<ul>
<li>Currently netting roughly 4,400 hits/month on a custom-built WordPress frame</li>
<li>About 20% of reader base are &#8220;frequent fliers&#8221; &#8212; considered heavy repeat visitors</li>
<li>Emphasis on &#8220;street cred&#8221;/authenticity of voice. Allow writers ample freedom to say things in their own way</li>
<li>Give student writers &amp; editors opportunity to self-edit and self-police with occasional spot-checking from the staff</li>
<li><a title="Be Younonymous" href="http://bucultureshock.com/?author=65" target="_blank">Be Younonymous</a>: Compelling content from anonymous guest contributors</li>
<li>Releasing content at an average rate of 20 posts per week</li>
<li>Recruiting new writers through current writers</li>
<li>Using Google Analytics to benchmark against past performance</li>
</ul>
<p>We asked Raul if he would be willing to share more about the inner workings of making <a title="BU Culture Shock" href="http://bucultureshock.com/" target="_blank">BU Culture Shock</a> run smoothly, and he has kindly provided us with the presentation he delivered during the meeting. <p>Jenny Mackintosh of Public Relations updated the Communicators on <a title="recent changes made to Facebook Page functionality" href="http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150090729064822&amp;id=10381469571" target="_blank">recent changes made to Facebook Page functionality</a>. Facebook Pages now act more similarly to Profiles, including the ability to &#8220;Use Facebook as Your Page.&#8221; This includes updates &amp; notifications (new fans and wall posts), the ability to view the News Feed as the Page, and the ability to write on other Pages&#8217; walls. Some possible trouble spots included:</p>
<ul>
<li>Pages&#8217; walls no longer in complete timeline order (help for admins: Admin View)</li>
<li>Confusion about switching between &#8220;Use Facebook as Your Page&#8221; and &#8220;Use Facebook as Yourself&#8221; &#8212; could lead to erroneous posts from the wrong author.</li>
<li>Facebook no longer automatically delivering news feed updates to fans who haven&#8217;t visited your Page recently (<a title="All Facebook: News Feed Option Shows Friends You Interact With Most" href="http://www.allfacebook.com/news-feed-option-shows-friends-you-interact-with-most-2011-02" target="_blank">read more about this on All Facebook</a>)</li>
</ul>

Many members of the group are tasked with creating new content for their websites, including going to department events and taking shots of speakers and attendees. We thought it might be a good idea to bring in a professional photographer to provide some tips for the group. Katherine provided some suggestions on making the best of your environment, as well as some things to look for in composition:</p>
<p><strong>Tips for Event Photography</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Pack well</strong>: Extra batteries, memory, and accessories all in one place, easily accessible</li>
<li><strong>Create a shot list ahead of time</strong>: Group shots, details of the event. Make up the list beforehand so you don&#8217;t find yourself missing shots afterward</li>
<li><strong>When you arrive, assess the scene</strong>: Lighting conditions? Where will subjects be? Determine approximate camera settings ahead of time and test, test, test</li>
</ul>
<p><span id="more-229"></span></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Be aware of your backgrounds</strong>: Distracting details behind the scene? Can you change your angle to avoid them? Are there objects that may interfere with the subject&#8217;s head (poles, etc.)? Be aware of auto focus&#8217;s tendency to grab onto repeating horizontal &amp; vertical patterns &#8212; fences, building structure</li>
<li><strong>Auto focus is your friend</strong>: Fast and reliable. Remember to focus on the eyes of your subject.</li>
<li><strong>1/60 shutter speed is minimum for stopping motion in low light</strong>: Do you need to accommodate for this with your camera&#8217;s settings?</li>
<li><strong>Photographing groups</strong>: Take LOTS of photos &#8212; you will not catch blinks or distracted group members on your camera&#8217;s screen.</li>
<li><strong>If using off-camera flash, try bouncing it off a ceiling or wall</strong>: Makes photo subjects look less harshly lit; creates different feel for the shot</li>
<li><strong>Try to shoot people at eye level</strong>: This applies most to children &#8212; works great to kneel down to their perspective</li>
<li><strong>Shoot details as well as overalls of the scene</strong>: Think of purposes in your marketing materials.</li>
<li><strong>Back up your data: </strong>Use a uniform file naming format and back things up regularly (external hard drives are affordable and a great asset). Keep backups in a different location from the computer itself.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Photo Composition Ideas</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Use diagonal lines </strong>to break up your frame</li>
<li><strong>Do not center your subject </strong>in the frame. Try using the <a title="Rule of Thirds" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds" target="_blank">Rule of Thirds</a> or the <a title="Golden Mean" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio" target="_blank">Golden Mean</a> as a guide.</li>
<li><strong>Use clean uncluttered backgrounds</strong></li>
<li><strong>Don&#8217;t allow background items to intersect your subject </strong>(fence posts, telephone poles, branches, etc.)</li>
<li><strong>Use selective depth of field </strong>to emphasize the subject</li>
<li><strong>Try shooting from different angles</strong>: Lay on the ground, shoot straight down on subjects, etc.</li>
<li><strong>Build layers within your image </strong>so there is a foreground, middle and background</li>
</ul>
<p>Katherine also discussed equipment recommendations, which we will outline shortly in a follow-up post.</p>

All members present discussed the tools they were using for video production, and what they would like to gain from it. Sarah Evans from BU Photography also discussed the efforts of her department over the past several months. We then talked about upcoming meeting agenda items and events for cross-promotion.</p>
<p><strong>Public Relations Introductions</strong></p>
<p>First, <a title="Public Relations" href="http://www.bu.edu/phpbin/experts/index.php?template=nested" target="_blank">Public Relations</a> went around and introduced their team. <strong>Tom Testa</strong>, Asst. VP of PR, emphasized the name change from Media Relations (which implied a heavy media/Experts Program emphasis) to Public Relations, which is now more focused on messaging, content creation, and a blend of social media. Public Relations is hoping to be the center of conversation for the university, and to be the place where the outside community goes for its information on BU. The department is still beat-driven, with a client/agency model, which allows the team to meet one-on-one with clients (schools) and consult with them on a broader, all-encompassing promotional strategy, including social media.</p>

<p><strong>Colin Riley</strong>: Head Media Relations contact; head University spokesperson. Handles policies, crises, advice to internal staff on communications; contact for film shoots, commercials, facilitating agreements with parties outside the university.</p>
<p><strong>Richard Taffe</strong>: Covers <a title="LAW" href="http://www.bu.edu/law/" target="_blank">LAW</a>, <a title="SMG" href="http://management.bu.edu/index.shtml" target="_blank">SMG</a>, <a title="CAS" href="http://www.bu.edu/cas/" target="_blank">CAS</a>; determines media-friendly professors.</p>
<p><strong>Mary Tunney</strong>: Works with<a title="Stephen Prothero" href="http://www.bu.edu/religion/faculty/bios/prothero/" target="_blank"> Stephen Prothero</a> &amp; <a title="Andrew Bacevich" href="http://www.bu.edu/ir/faculty/alphabetical/bacevich/" target="_blank">Andrew Bacevich</a>; heads up social media initiatives; main contact for the <a title="broadcast studio" href="http://www.bu.edu/today/node/2505" target="_blank">broadcast studio</a> (1 Silber Way, 8th Floor), which houses an ISDN line &amp; audio hookup &#8212; contact her for scheduling television &amp; radio appearances.</p>
<p><strong>Kira Jastive</strong>: Works with <a title="COM" href="http://www.bu.edu/com/" target="_blank">COM</a> and <a title="Theology" href="http://www.bu.edu/sth/" target="_blank">Theology</a>; heads up video content &amp; multimedia initiatives.</p>

<p><strong>Jillian McNiff &amp; Kris Covarrubias</strong>: <a title="FitRec" href="http://www.bu.edu/fitrec/" target="_blank">FitRec</a> &#8212; using iMovie &amp; Final Cut &#8212; a student wrote a guide for them. <p><strong>Jean Connaughton</strong>: <a title="CFA" href="http://www.bu.edu/cfa/" target="_blank">CFA</a>. Some interest in live streaming, using Flip cameras to play with video now.</p>
<p><strong>Greg Johnson</strong>: <a title="Admissions" href="http://www.bu.edu/admissions/" target="_blank">Admissions</a>. Using Final Cut for video, want to grow knowledge of use.</p>
<p><strong>Raul Fernandez</strong>: <a title="Howard Thurman Center" href="http://www.bu.edu/thurman/" target="_blank">Howard Thurman Center</a>. Using social media outlets like <a title="Howard Thurman Center on Foursquare" href="http://foursquare.com/venue/950749" target="_blank">Foursquare</a> and <a title="Howard Thurman Center on Twitter" href="http://twitter.com/buhtc" target="_blank">Twitter</a>, but also using a listserv successfully &#8212; over 6,000 members. Also working with <a title="AdLab" href="http://www.bu.edu/adlab/" target="_blank">AdLab</a> for help with social &amp; traditional marketing. Video commercials on the docket for the blog coming up soon, and then a music video. Also experimenting with live chats in the future. Using a hand cam (not a Flip). Shooting in HD with Final Cut.</p>
<p><strong>Jacki  DeAngelo &amp; Adriane Dean</strong>: <a title="SMG" href="http://management.bu.edu/index.shtml" target="_blank">SM</a>G. Lots of video &#8212; using two Sony DV cameras &amp; lighting; a black backdrop for a more formal setting. Sending video out to external editors, but would <em>love </em>a dedicated Final Cut station with on-site editors. Cameras were recommended by Bob with BU Productions (the same person Nancy Marrs recommended). Trying to have panelists on polished videos by pulling them aside right after the panel with the camera &amp; backdrop. Will send a link for example videos.</p>
<p>Colin asked about SMG TV&#8217;s &#8212; how does it work?</p>
<p>Jacki: A woman in IS&amp;T does all the setup for us. We have an online ticketing system, so anyone with a BU login could request something to be placed on the LCD.</p>
<p><strong>Kelly Cunningham</strong>: <a title="Alumni Relations" href="http://www.bu.edu/alumni/" target="_blank">DAR</a>. We have only gotten our feet wet with Flip cameras and iMovie. Under the guidance of students, we&#8217;re combining footage from the <a title="Global Day of Service" href="http://www.bu.edu/dayofservice/" target="_blank">Global Day of Service</a>, and we&#8217;re going to have a student put together a video for the alumni awards in October. We&#8217;re eager, but not very well-versed in the technology yet. We also repurpose material from Public Relations  for our <a title="BU Alumni Facebook page" href="http://www.facebook.com/BUalumni" target="_blank">Facebook page</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Nat Boyle</strong>: I work with <a title="New Media" href="http://www.bu.edu/nm/" target="_blank">New Media</a>/<a title="Bostonia" href="http://www.bu.edu/bostonia/" target="_blank">Bostonia</a>/<a title="BU Today" href="http://www.bu.edu/today/" target="_blank">BU Today</a> to produce social media content, and work to advance BU&#8217;s brand using social media.</p>
<p><strong>Ryan Bersani</strong>: <a title="Alumni Relations" href="http://www.bu.edu/alumni/" target="_blank">Alumni Relations</a>. I work with Facebook advertising, so you can talk with me if you&#8217;re interested in it. Running an ad campaign for <a title="Alumni Weekend" href="http://www.bu.edu/alumniweekend/" target="_blank">Alumni Weekend</a> coming up, so we&#8217;re excited about that.</p>
<p><strong>Nelia Ponte</strong>: Content Management Director in a new department. My focus now is the <a title="BU.edu" href="http://www.bu.edu/" target="_blank">BU.edu homepage</a>, as well as <a title="BUniverse" href="http://www.bu.edu/buniverse/" target="_blank">BUniverse</a>, which is still in beta. We&#8217;re looking to launch version 2.0 very soon, which will include changes to the Student/Faculty/Staff/Alumni categorization feature.</p>
<p><strong>Charles Southworth</strong>: <a title="Distance Education" href="http://www.bu.edu/online/" target="_blank">Distance Education</a>. Mostly focused on production &#8212; a little bit of social media, a bit of marketing, but mostly media production.</p>
<p><strong>Maria Pantages</strong>: <a title="MED" href="http://www.bumc.bu.edu/" target="_blank">MED</a>, Corporate Communications. We&#8217;re just getting started, and hard copy is still a focus. We&#8217;re slowly working &#8212; Nate can dream big!</p>
<p><strong>Nathan Bliss</strong>: <a title="MED" href="http://www.bumc.bu.edu/" target="_blank">MED</a>. Started <a title="@BUMedicine on Twitter" href="http://twitter.com/BUMedicine" target="_blank">Twitter</a> &amp; <a title="BU Medicine on Facebook" href="http://www.facebook.com/BUMedicine" target="_blank">Facebook</a> accounts for <a title="Boston University School of Medicine" href="http://www.bumc.bu.edu/busm/" target="_blank">Boston University School of Medicine</a>. We have one Flip cam, but haven&#8217;t really used it yet. We&#8217;re definitely interested in a video production seminar &#8212; still figuring out what we&#8217;d want to do with video. Note: we&#8217;re separate from the hospital when it comes to Facebook &amp; Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>Michelle Salzman</strong>: <a title="SPH" href="http://sph.bu.edu/" target="_blank">SPH</a>. We&#8217;re experimenting with video for student projects. We use a Kodak version of a &#8220;Flip,&#8221; along with iMovie. We&#8217;re looking for better ways to produce video and advice on better equipment.</p>
<p><strong>Marie Turley</strong>: Maintain the BUSM alumni <a title="BUSM Alumni Facebook profile" href="http://www.facebook.com/alumbusm" target="_blank">Facebook profile</a>, and <a title="blog for the Deans of the School of Medicine" href="http://blogs.bu.edu/deansblg/" target="_blank">blog for the Deans of the School of Medicine</a> &#8212; I&#8217;m interested in a social media presence for that. We&#8217;re not working with video yet, but definitely interested in it.</p>
<p><strong>Kat Cozzi</strong>: <a title="MET" href="http://www.bu.edu/met/" target="_blank">MET</a>, Marketing Department. I manage the social media presence. I&#8217;ve been working on marketing videos, repurposing videos that Charles&#8217;s team has taken, and making the content digestible for Facebook. We did one video with a Flip camera of graduation. We&#8217;d love to learn more about producing good videos. We have a COM student helping to edit and repurpose videos using Final Cut on a Mac. We did this because we had so much video to work with, and wanted to use it.</p>
<p><strong>Nikki Marro</strong>: <a title="SED" href="http://www.bu.edu/sed/" target="_blank">SED</a>. We&#8217;ve done a little bit of movie work, using a Flip camera and either Adobe Premier or Windows Movie Maker.</p>
<p><strong>Susan Lebovits</strong>: <a title="BU Sustainability" href="http://www.bu.edu/sustainability/" target="_blank">Sustainability</a>. A student and I have been shooting films with a Kodak &#8220;Flip,&#8221; including move-in and the <a title="sustainability@BU Festival" href="http://www.bu.edu/sustainability/what-you-can-do/events/sustainabilitybu-festival/" target="_blank">sustainability@BU Festival</a>. The student is helping to edit, but we&#8217;re not proud of the product yet &#8212; carving out nights &amp; weekends to edit. We want to learn how to make this more manageable.</p>
<p><strong>BU Photography</strong></p>
<p><strong>Sarah Evans</strong>: <a title="BU Photography" href="http://www.bu.edu/photo/" target="_blank">BU Photography</a>. We&#8217;re more interested in <a title="Avid software" href="http://www.avid.com/US/" target="_blank">Avid</a>. Here&#8217;s what BU Photo has been up to: we&#8217;re working to get away from the &#8220;dead-end assignment.&#8221; We&#8217;re always thinking in terms of immediate need, but now we&#8217;re asking, &#8220;How else can we stretch this?&#8221; &#8212; banners, Facebook, Twitter &#8212; one assignment, different uses. This has been our initiative over the past 6-8 months. For example, we now include Facebook-friendly photos in our media library.</p>
<p>Susan: That&#8217;s a great idea, because we need web-friendly versions of photos (I had to teach myself Photoshop to learn how to repurpose large photos in smaller versions).</p>
<p>Sarah: We should talk about creating one-click options in Photoshop &#8212; shortcuts you can set (like macros?)</p>
<p>Tom: How many are doing photography too? (most hands raise) &#8212; Maybe that&#8217;s a tutorial we need to look at too.</p>
<p>Nelia: You could also do photo slideshows in iMovie, upload to <a title="BUniverse" href="http://www.bu.edu/buniverse/" target="_blank">BUniverse</a> and then embed as a video on your website. This is what <a title="BU Today" href="http://www.bu.edu/today/" target="_blank">BU Today</a> does.</p>
<p><strong>Next steps &amp; upcoming events</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;d like to talk more about blogs and how each college, if they have a blog, what their strategy is compared to other social platforms. We&#8217;ve added blog creation, maintenance and promotion to the October agenda. We&#8217;re happy to announce that today, <a title="our official Foursquare page has been launched" href="http://foursquare.com/bu_tweets" target="_blank">our official page has been launched</a>:</p>

If you are a Social Media Communicator and would like to become a manager of your location, send us an e-mail with your Foursquare username and we&#8217;ll add you. This will allow you to edit your building&#8217;s information and add specials.</p>
<p>Additionally, if you search for your venue and find false information in the profile (ex. phone numbers, category, missing Twitter handle, etc.) please let us know and we can change it. We will talk more about this, along with launching specials, at the September meeting.</p>

<p><strong>Foursquare and geolocation services</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://foursquare.com"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-78" style="margin: 10px" src="http://blogs.bu.edu/socialmedia/files/2010/08/foursquare-logo1-300x82.png" alt="Foursquare" hspace="10" vspace="10" width="200" /></a>Mary Tunney and Jenny Mackintosh of Public Relations introduced their plan to roll out <a title="Foursquare" href="http://foursquare.com/" target="_blank">Foursquare</a> campus-wide in the next few weeks. In their own words:</p>
<blockquote><p><em><a title="Foursquare" href="http://foursquare.com/" target="_blank">Foursquare</a> is a mobile application that makes cities easier to use and more interesting to explore. It is a friend-finder, a social city guide and a game that challenges users to experience new things, and rewards them for doing so. Foursquare lets users &#8220;check in&#8221; to a place when they&#8217;re there, tell friends where they are and track the history of where they&#8217;ve been and who they&#8217;ve been there with.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>They have been working to compile <a title="a list of venues related to Boston University" href="http://foursquare.com/search?q=boston+university&amp;x=0&amp;y=0" target="_blank">a list of venues related to Boston University</a> in preparation for Foursquare to launch a Boston University Foursquare page (similar to the <a title="Syracuse University Foursquare page" href="http://foursquare.com/syracuseu" target="_blank">Syracuse University Foursquare page</a>, for example). Currently, <a href="http://foursquare.com/user/bu_tweets">BU has a profile page</a>, which will be converted into the newer university landing page in the next week or so. Once BU &#8220;owns&#8221; those venues on Foursquare, we will be able to <a title="access analytics" href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/09/foursquare-introduces-new-tools-for-businesses/" target="_blank">access analytics</a> on who is visiting, as well as manage <a title="specials and discounts" href="http://mashable.com/2010/05/17/starbucks-foursquare-mayor-specials/" target="_blank">specials and discounts</a> at particular locations around campus.</p>

<p><a href="http://scvngr.com"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-81" style="margin: 10px" src="http://blogs.bu.edu/socialmedia/files/2010/08/scvngr.jpg" alt="SCVNGR" hspace="10" vspace="10" width="206" height="56" /></a>Leo Pare of <a title="BU Athletics" href="http://www.goterriers.com/" target="_blank">Athletics</a> asked about the accuracy of checking in to locations close to each other, for example, <a title="Nickerson Field" href="http://foursquare.com/venue/346310" target="_blank">Nickerson Field</a> and <a title="Agganis Arena" href="http://foursquare.com/venue/18105" target="_blank">Agganis Arena</a>. We clarified that Foursquare&#8217;s check-in system is not automatic; it can use geolocation services on your phone to suggest nearby locations, but ultimately, it is up to the user to check in. Susan Lebovits of <a title="BU Sustainability" href="http://www.bu.edu/sustainability/" target="_blank">Sustainability</a> asked if Foursquare could be used to mark &#8220;green&#8221; landmarks around campus as part of a promotion, since the actual Sustainability office is not likely to be visited by the general population. We suggested that she send a list of venues she might be interested in promoting so that we can include them in a second round of requests. We also discussed <a title="SCVNGR" href="http://scvngr.com/" target="_blank">SCVNGR</a> as another tool that might allow her to create a challenge on her own.  Raul Fernandez of the <a title="Howard Thurman Center" href="http://www.bu.edu/thurman/" target="_blank">Howard Thurman Center</a> also underlined a few of the key differences between Foursquare and SCVNGR, describing SCVNGR as &#8220;more flexible and customizable&#8221; with the addition of challenges and &#8220;treks.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>BU Today&#8217;s new editor, John O&#8217;Rourke</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://bu.edu/today"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-82" src="http://blogs.bu.edu/socialmedia/files/2010/08/BUToday.png" alt="BU Today" hspace="10" vspace="10" width="260" height="62" /></a>John O&#8217;Rourke came by the Social Media Communicators meeting to introduce himself and to give some insights on what <a title="BU Today" href="http://www.bu.edu/today" target="_blank">BU Today</a> is looking to cover in the upcoming academic year. They are looking for feedback on the site &#8212; the good, the bad, and any suggestions on how to make BU Today a more effective news source for the campus community. They will put a stronger emphasis on student stories this year in the hopes of boosting student readership. They are also looking to expand beyond their core set of campus experts and to talk with a broader range of professors. <p>Kim Cornuelle, BU Today&#8217;s production manager, also went over some tips for coverage. The front page has three headlines and one feature per day during the regular academic year. If you have an event coming up, make sure to put it into the <a title="BU Calendar" href="http://www.bu.edu/calendar/" target="_blank">BU Calendar</a>, as they populate their BU Today calendar (both on the site and in the <a title="BU Today e-mail" href="http://www.bu.edu/today/subscribe" target="_blank">daily e-mail</a>) from those events. They also suggested keeping BU Today in the loop for social media-related cross-promotional opportunities &#8212; any <a title="Hashtag example: Commencement 2010" href="http://www.bu.edu/today/node/11003" target="_blank">official event hashtags</a> on Twitter, links and other information can be included in the bottoms of stories to help promote use.</p>

<p>Sustainability, SPH, DAR, FitRec and CFA all had events to promote this month, which we will list in the &#8220;Communicators&#8221; section shortly.
