BU Professor, married, two great "adult kids", teach in Computer Science and Administrative Sciences. Direct the Project Management Programs at Boston University. Love technology, have a lot of fun teaching courses and mentoring students. In academia for about 30 years. Enjoy teaching and interaction with students. Nice to see that many of them have become more successful than I have. (If you are reading this...and are stinking rich...remember you promised me 2% of your gross revenue. Also BU was promised 3%....)

Thesis FAQ

Thesis Questions.

  1. Is there a thesis option within the MSPM program, and what does it entail?

Yes. Please see this link

  • Does the thesis option replace the AD807 Capstone Project, or is it an additional requirement?

Possibly but not necessarily.

  1. What is the structure of the thesis process?
  • How are thesis supervision and advisory managed? Are there specific professors (like Professor Maltzman) available for thesis supervision, and are there any formal steps for getting a supervisor?

Take two  electives and it is a 8 credit thesis. It’s a very complex undertaking and takes two semesters.

MET CS has these thesis courses. MET CS 810 Master’s Thesis in Computer Science:. You can apply it to MET CIS IT PM thesis.

ADMIN SC:

  1. **MET AD 801: Directed Study in Administrative Sciences**:

   – This course functions similarly to a thesis course, allowing students to work on a significant research project under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Students can conduct original research tailored to their field of study (such as finance, project management, or risk management), resulting in a formal report or equivalent to a thesis.

   – **Enrollment Requirements**: To enroll in MET AD 801, students typically need departmental approval and a faculty advisor who agrees to supervise the project. This course allows for customization and depth in research, making it suitable for students interested in a thesis-like experience within the Administrative Sciences.

  1. **MET AD 804: Capstone Project**:

   – While not a traditional thesis, MET AD 804 serves as the capstone for several Administrative Sciences programs. It involves an applied research project that integrates knowledge from coursework to solve real-world business problems. This is ideal for students who prefer a hands-on project over theoretica

  • Is there a committee or jury that evaluates the thesis, and if so, what role do they play in the assessment?

The department of computer science announces the presentation broadly and invites people to the thesis presentation. The thesis is preserved in the library once approved

  1. Duration and timeline considerations:
  • Does opting for a thesis affect the standard duration of the program?
  • Can the thesis option be completed within one semester without causing delays in graduation?

Yes.

The thesis takes two semesters

  1. Eligibility and prerequisites for the thesis option:
  • Are there any specific prerequisites or criteria for selecting the thesis option?

GPA of 3.8

And you should be towards the end of your program for example two courses left both electives

  1. Contacts for detailed guidance:
  • Who is the best point of contact within the department or program for detailed guidance on the thesis option (perhaps someone who coordinates special pathways or customizations in the program)?

The director is the first point of contact.

  1. Value and recommendation:
  • Based on your understanding of the MSPM program, do you recommend the thesis option for students looking to gain more in-depth research experience? What advantages might it offer over the standard pathway?

If you are planning to do a PhD in the future, it’s a valuable exercise. Otherwise there is no need.

Note- there are other research course numbers that are thesis like. They are upper level numbers.

Desk Copy

My process is to first introduce, by email, the new Finance faculty to the representative of McGraw-Hill so that they are familiar with the faculty’s name when they have to approve desk copy requests. Then I have the new faculty member contact the representative of the publisher to request desk copies.  I provide the publisher’s Help Desk telephone number.  I also recommend that the desk copy, if in paper form, be sent to the faculty’s home rather than being sent to Boston University – less “lost” desk copies.

For publishers other than McGraw-Hill,  contact the appropriate publisher representative since they would have a relationship.
