Hello, I’m Alexander McBrier

I’m Currently entering my junior year at Boston University studying computer science. This summer I am interning at Proofpoint as a technical support intern. During the school year I work as a web assistant for the BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. I previously spent my fall and spring semester in 2023  developing cozytypes.com.

Experiences

Boston University Powerlifting Team

boston university powerliftingAthlete involved with Boston University’s USAPL Club Powerlifting Team. I competed in the Collegiate Cup in Worchester, Massachusets last fall semester.

Boston University School of Medicine

Currently employed by BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine as a front-end developer, helping build and maintain their WordPress site. The site is going through renovations, so much of my work has been modifying existing content within the framework, including research articles and other academic works.

Cozytypes

Founded cozytypes.com, a typing website to help both beginners and experts sharpen their skills. By creating this app by myself from the ground up, I learned all of the valuable skills and resources necessary to develop a full-stack website. The site has now reached over 80,000 completed tests and has spread to more than 100 different countries.

Throughout this project, I was met with many difficulties and problems. I wanted users to have the option to sign in and save their progress and see their statistics, so I decided to build the site using PHP and having an SQL database. The site now keeps track of the users total typing tests in each category, top scores, as well as a leaderboard showcasing users with the highest scores.

I tried to promote the best user experience possible, so I used cookies, local storage, and other methods to and their settings and preferences, regardless if they made an account with us or not. I also worked hard to make sure that all changes to settings were done in real time, so the user is able to see the changes they have made without refreshing the site.

Programming Instructor

Worked as a volunteer instructor alongside others teaching young children programming at my local middle school. During our sessions, topics ranged from simple web development into Object Oriented Programming Languages.

Steel City Codes, the organization I volunteered for promoted inclusivity in STEM by educating young students in computer science. Our chapter met weekly, and I was tasked with creating fun and interactive lessons to walk through with the students.
