{"id":203,"date":"2010-11-12T15:26:55","date_gmt":"2010-11-12T19:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/bjuarez\/?p=203"},"modified":"2010-11-17T17:04:35","modified_gmt":"2010-11-17T21:04:35","slug":"this-just-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/bjuarez\/2010\/11\/12\/this-just-in\/","title":{"rendered":"This Just In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am at this moment visiting the new Art of the America&#8217;s Wing at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfa.org\">Museum of Fine Arts<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 The building is magnificent.\u00a0 Famed Architect Lord Norman Foster&#8217;s characteristic eye for detail is evident throughout.\u00a0 This is a huge achievement for the Museum and for the City of Boston.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Congressman Michael Capuano hailed the new Wing as a symbol of welcome to all.\u00a0 He noted that growing up as the son and grandson of shoemakers, he did not always feel welcome at the MFA.\u00a0 He expressed the hope that all New Englanders will come to view the museum as their own.<\/p>\n<p>The good intentions of the Wing are clear.\u00a0 Bridging the cultures in this hemisphere of strangers is a worthy and overdue endeavor.\u00a0 To an observer of my background, the exhibition&#8217;s suggestion of equivalence between the 18th century art and culture of Mexico and South America and that of the fledgling 13 American colonies is a little out of balance.\u00a0 But hometown pride is understandable especially in this splendid\u00a0 moment of achievement.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quaibranly.fr\/\">Quai Branly<\/a> museum (of world cultures) in Paris, unwittingly tells us more about how the locals\u00a0 &#8211;in this case the French &#8212;\u00a0 see &#8220;other&#8221; world cultures than it does about the cultures themselves.\u00a0 While there is some of that here, the long history of genuine interest in world cultures in New England encourages me to view the Wing as the opening of a friendly conversation that will further open Boston to the world and the world to Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Full-time BU students are admitted free with ID.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfa.org\/welcome\/\">View museum director Malcolm Rogers&#8217; remarks on the opening. <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am at this moment visiting the new Art of the America&#8217;s Wing at the Museum of Fine Arts.\u00a0\u00a0 The building is magnificent.\u00a0 Famed Architect Lord Norman Foster&#8217;s characteristic eye for detail is evident throughout.\u00a0 This is a huge achievement for the Museum and for the City of Boston.
