Photo by Slawek<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I mentioned in a post last week that I intended to see <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.petergreenawayevents.com\/petergreenaway.html\">Peter  Greenaway&#8217;s<\/a> installation,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.armoryonpark.org\/index.php\/programs_events\/detail\/last_supper_peter_greenaway\/\"> Last Supper, in the Park Avenue Armory<\/a><\/strong> while in New York.\u00a0 It was a visually spectacular show and it had some things to say about the way we experience art and the relationship between art and technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Art and Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We can no longer view art and technology as uneasy allies.\u00a0 Both serve each other and we should embrace this relationship. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An  inventor of many prototypes including the submarine and airplane, it is  difficult to imagine <strong>Leonardo Da Vinci<\/strong> objecting to Peter Greenaway&#8217;s use of his  iconic painting, Last Supper.\u00a0 Leonardo used the latest materials available to him in his own time; despite this, his paintings are rotting. Shows like Greenaway&#8217;s, give them new life.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><strong><span><a href=\"http:\/\/milan.arounder.com\/en\/churches\/santa-maria-delle-grazie-church\">The Santa Maria delle Grazie,<\/a> Home of\u00a0 Last Supper, Recreated in the Armory<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Y<\/span><span>ou can buy tickets online far in advance to see the original painting, fly to Milan, wait in a long line inside Santa Maria delle Grazie (St. Mary of the Graces) and march past the painting. <strong>This is a moving experience but one that most people will not have.<\/strong> Greenaway has recreated <\/span><span>Santa Maria delle Grazie within the Park Avenue Armory adding context to the experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The installation has already been viewed by thousands of people and counting.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Would you stare at a painting for 45 minutes &#8212; even if it was Last Supper? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Visitors are kept moving in the Santa Maria delle Grazie but even if you could stay as long as you wished, how long would that be?\u00a0 Staring at a painting &#8212; even a great one&#8211; for more than fifteen minutes is not easy.\u00a0 With the use of lights and music, Greenaway&#8217;s Last Supper renders new insights by the second, forever rescuing the work from cliche.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><span><strong>Informal Atmosphere<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is understandable that a certain decorum is maintained when viewing the original.\u00a0 The work itself is vulnerable; visitors are expected to move around the space with care and they are after all, in a convent within a church.\u00a0 But in Greenaway&#8217;s Last Supper, people are at the Armory where they can walk around and talk to each other about the work.\u00a0 A relaxed, informal atmosphere mirrors the communal message of the work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <strong>Is this high culture or low?\u00a0 Is it technology or art? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Answer: &#8220;yes.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.armoryonpark.org\/\"><strong><span>Park Avenue Armory<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>643 Park Avenue<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Closes January 6.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.armoryonpark.org\/index.php\/programs_events\/detail\/last_supper_peter_greenaway\/\">More information and to purchase tickets.<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I mentioned in a post last week that I intended to see Peter Greenaway&#8217;s installation, Last Supper, in the Park Avenue Armory while in New York.\u00a0 It was a visually spectacular show and it had some things to say about the way we experience art and the relationship between art and technology.
