After nearly a three-year hiatus from blog updates, the Men’s Water Polo team is coming in hot with a brand-new website with new information and rare photos of players!

BUMPolo got back to Boston late last night from our second tournament at Yale! It was a weekend filled with fierce competition in a very unique and historic pool. In our first game against Yale, we made a very strong and concentrated attack in the second half, but we were overcome and lost 10-6. In our second game of the day against UConn, we won with a final score of 16-2.
Sunday began with a win over Dartmouth B with a final score of 9-5 and concluded with a well fought game against Dartmouth A with a final score of 17-6 Dartmouth. Thanks to all those who came out to show some support!! We are looking forward to a great full week of training ahead.
BUMPolo has arrived safely in New Haven, Connecticut, for our second tournament of the season at Yale University. A full weekend of playing awaits, as we have two games today, and two games Sunday! The times and details are below!

And just like that, the weekend is over! BUMPolo had a very eventful start to the season over the weekend facing the top two teams in the league, Boston College and Dartmouth. After playing very close first halves in both games, Dartmouth and BC were able to open up a lead in the third and fourth quarters to win the match over BU. They were tough back to back losses, but went back to the drawing board with an extra touch of motivation.
In the final game of the night, BU took a victory over Middlebury, with a decisive win 12-4.
BUMPolo played a very tight game with Northeastern to wrap up the tournament weekend. The match was tied until halfway through the fourth quarter where BU scored back to back goals to take a one point lead. With two minutes remaining, Northeastern came back hard and tied the game. Northeastern scored the game winning goal in the last 60 seconds of play - leaving BUMPolo with a 1-3 record for the opening weekend. We have learned our strengths and weaknesses from this past weekend and look forward to sharpening up all our skills over the next two weeks before we head to Yale for our second tournament of the season.
The BU Men's Water Polo team had a record setting week as 25 new players to the team came to the first official practice of the season. Among them are student athletes from Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, California, Florida and many other locations around the country! The recruitment table at SPLASH did an outstanding job. 
New Head Coach Gerard LaFond has taken over the team and has been whipping all players back into tip-top shape as our first tournament comes closer. We have a lot of talented and hard working athletes on the squad this year, so be sure to come out and watch us play at our home tournament September 24th and 25th at The BU Fitrec! Stay tuned for more information with times and brackets in the next few days.
With a few weeks remaining until the first day of classes at Boston University, the Men's Water Polo team is currently hard at work planning, organizing, and training in preparation for another successful season.

The Terriers traveled to Yale University on the weekend of October 10-11 for the second New England Division tournament of the season, where they would take on UConn, Dartmouth, Boston College, and Yale.
BU's game against UConn featured a quick 5-0 lead for the Terriers established in the 1st quarter largely due to the defensive diligence of freshman Austin Vargas and sophomore Andy McClung. Throughout the rest of the game, new players and seasoned veterans alike peppered the UConn goal with shots, many of them reaching their destination. The 14-2 final score accurately reflected BU's ability to counterattack and work the ball around the offense.
BU's second game featured the Terriers taking on Dartmouth College. Despite strong team defensive play, Dartmouth was able to capitalize on mistakes and turnovers to establish a first half lead, which they built on throughout the second half, leading to a final score of 16-6.
The third game for BU brought rivals Boston College face-to-face with the Terriers for a third time this season. As in previous games, BC's depth in offensive firepower proved too much for BU, despite marked improvement in team play by the Terriers from previous games. A 12-4 victory for Boston College was a fair result for both sides.
BU's last game of the tournament brought BU together with Yale, which produced an instant classic not soon to be forgotten. The first half saw the Terriers establish a 5-2 lead, but Yale finished the half with a strong comeback effort; the half finished at 6-6. In the second half, the lead went back and forth constantly between the two sides. A tense 4th quarter saw senior Joshua McDonough explode with 5 goals, but it wasn't enough to hold the Bulldogs of Yale off, and regulation time ended at 12-12. Two overtime periods of 3 minutes each were then played, which still wasn't enough to separate the two teams, as the scoreboard read 13-13. A final period of sudden death overtime saw Yale score within two minutes, which brought this marathon of a game to a close. It was a heartbreaking finish for the BU Terriers, but an incredible game and valuable learning experience.
Boston University Men's Water Polo hosted the first CWPA New England Division tournament this past weekend, September 26th and 27th. Middlebury College, Yale University, Dartmouth College, Boston College, and the University of Connecticut were all in attendance, and each team played 4 games against a selection of the competitors.
The Terriers first game of the weekend was against Middlebury College, which ended in a 14-8 victory for BU. The game was closely and tensely contested through 3 quarters, but a 7-0 shutout 4th quarter from the Terriers saw the team through to victory.
The second game of the weekend saw BU take on Dartmouth, who the Terriers defeated for the first time ever at last year's New England Championships. A standout performance from junior goalie Thomas Willwerth wasn't quite enough for BU this year, as Dartmouth took this game 10-5.
Sunday's first game pitted BU vs. UConn, which the Terriers would go on to win 14-2. Many new players saw game action, with goals coming in from inexperienced players and seasoned veterans alike.
The last game of the weekend was the latest edition of the B-Line Rivalry with Boston College, but the Eagles proved too strong for BU this time, winning 15-2. The Terriers fought and kept things close in the 1st half, but Boston College took the game out of reach throughout the 2nd half.
The men of Boston University will continue to train and prepare for the next New England Division tournament, which will take place at Yale University on October 10th and 11th.
The Terriers faced the Eagles of Boston College in their first scrimmage of the season on Sunday, September 13. After two weeks of tough physical conditioning, BU was ready for the challenge, but never matched BC's intensity and physicality during the game. The first 3 quarters of the game saw the Eagles establish and steadily increase their lead, with many goals coming off quick counterattacks that split the defense and left junior Thomas Willwerth exposed. The 4th quarter, however, saw senior Joshua McDonough and sophomore Blake Hallisey come alive, leading the Terriers to a 5-0 shutout quarter. The 18-5 final score was indicative of the incisive BC offense and the situational defensive work that needs to be practiced by BU.
Many new players, including those with no prior water polo experience, were given game time during the scrimmage vs. Boston College. This game was a great first experience for these players and returning players alike, and it highlights the work that still needs to be done for BU.
Boston University's second scrimmage of the season came later in the afternoon on Sunday, September 13 vs. Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The newly formed WPI team showed great team spirit throughout the afternoon, and BU learned valuable game lessons after its scrimmage with BC, which were applied in the game against WPI. Senior Joshua McDonough and sophomore Blake Hallisey once again led the scoring for the Terriers, with contributions also coming from the whole complement of the team. The final score of 15-9 was a fair reflection of BU's explosive 2nd and 3rd quarters, with WPI pulling a few goals back in the 4th quarter.
The Terriers will return to the pool this week for more conditioning work, with more time devoted to game drills and scrimmaging in the near future.
