{"id":505,"date":"2012-03-26T09:49:35","date_gmt":"2012-03-26T13:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/?p=505"},"modified":"2012-03-26T09:49:35","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T13:49:35","slug":"kate-tips-for-tackling-the-study-abroad-application","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/2012\/03\/26\/kate-tips-for-tackling-the-study-abroad-application\/","title":{"rendered":"Kate: Tips for Tackling the Study Abroad Application"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/files\/2012\/01\/Kate-Image-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Kate Image\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This semester, I began the grueling process of applying to a study abroad program. \u00a0When I was on the college hunt, I realized that studying abroad opportunities was a must where ever I ended up.\u00a0 And I definitely picked the right place for that.\u00a0 BU has programs all over the world doing any types of program you could think of.\u00a0 A girl in my sorority just got back from a Creative Writing Trip to Greece.\u00a0 My other friend spent a semester at sea.\u00a0 My plan: London Internship Program for Fall 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The following are a few tips I have for those beginning the application process and how to make sure you get accepted to the program of your choice!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Plan ahead. <\/strong> There a certain requirements to go on a study abroad program, especially ones that have an internship component (check out those requirements <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/files\/2009\/12\/studyabroad_factsheet_march142012.pdf\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 Decide early what semester or summer you want to go abroad and plan your schedule accordingly.\u00a0 There are no exceptions for the class or GPA requirements so make sure you\u2019re all set when it comes time to apply.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get your recommendation letters. <\/strong> Most applications require 1-2 professor recommendations.\u00a0 Contact your recommenders early.\u00a0 It is not okay to expect them to finish it in a day so consider reaching out to them at least a month before the application is due.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid to send them a reminder email if the deadline is closing in but don\u2019t badger them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply early!<\/strong> <strong> <\/strong>This may be the most important piece of advice I have to offer you.\u00a0 Applications and decisions are made on a rolling basis a.k.a. the sooner you get it in, the sooner you find out your decision.\u00a0 I had one friend who turned the application in almost two months before it was due and heard back in 12 days (the usually time is about four weeks).\u00a0 Also, many of the popular programs will fill up before the application deadline.\u00a0 Procrastinating your application may lead to a rejection from your program of choice.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve been accepted (congrats!), get all your forms and deposit payment in fast!
