I get it. No one wants to be that annoying friend who promotes their podcast on Instagram. But\u00a0maybe that annoying friend is onto something.\u00a0A few friends of mine started a podcast awhile back. I confess that I didn\u2019t listen to it. Story\u00a0after story, conversational reference after conversational reference\u2014I didn\u2019t care. I don\u2019t know\u00a0what it was that compelled me to finally click on it. Quarantine boredom, maybe, or possibly\u00a0the desire to support my friends\u2019 misguided passions. To my surprise I found myself loving it. It\u00a0felt like I was just spending time with the homies. And I couldn\u2019t help but wonder. Are all our\u00a0conversations just potential podcast episodes? Should we, in this age of late-stage capitalism,\u00a0be trying to profit off this?\u00a0Answer: probably, yes. Why not? You and your friends are hilarious and adorable. Everyone\u00a0would be lucky to hear your conversations. And what\u2019s more COM than getting involved in the\u00a0latest trend of information exchange?\u00a0My roommate and I had this thought in the fall of 2019 when we decided we<\/p>\n
1) were bored and
\n2) needed something a little eyebrow-raising to add to our resume.<\/p>\n
We looked into WTBU\u2019s\u00a0podcast situation and applied with our concept: we planned to do weekly wellness\u00a0challenges\u2014drink 8 glasses of water, walk 10,000 steps a day, meditate regularly\u2014and discuss\u00a0them together on the airwaves. We decided to call it Just Another Manic Monday, after the\u00a0Bangles song, and aimed to release episodes on Mondays. While it\u2019s been a bit of a mess of\u00a0pauses and sometimes poor audio editing as we figure out Adobe (BU gives its students\u00a0subscriptions for free!), we\u2019ve put together a fun show that my boss, her high school history\u00a0teacher, and our parents listen to.\u00a0We didn\u2019t think anyone listened. Anchor showed us that we had a couple of random listens in\u00a0Kazakhstan and Bolivia, but we knew those were spam of some kind. But then we got a\u00a0message on our very sparse Instagram. It was from a random account with a hundred or so\u00a0followers. It was a Canadian girl telling us that throughout Ontario\u2019s intensive lockdown, our\u00a0podcast made her feel like she was hanging out with the gals. All of a sudden, it felt like\u00a0something bigger than just a cute weekend activity. We\u2019ve been riding that high ever since.\u00a0One piece of advice, before you start: Pick a concept. Don\u2019t just do the \u201cwe talk for an hour and\u00a0hope someone listens\u201d shtick. As adorable as you are, you\u2019ll want something to guide the\u00a0conversation. Now get going!
