{"id":986,"date":"2013-01-23T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2013-01-23T13:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/?p=986"},"modified":"2013-01-22T00:00:26","modified_gmt":"2013-01-22T04:00:26","slug":"lauren-first-day-intern-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/2013\/01\/23\/lauren-first-day-intern-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Lauren: First-day Intern Tips!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/files\/2012\/01\/Lauren-Image1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-243\" height=\"150\" width=\"150\" title=\"Lauren Image\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/files\/2012\/01\/Lauren-Image1-150x150.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/files\/2012\/01\/Lauren-Image1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/files\/2012\/01\/Lauren-Image1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comblog\/files\/2012\/01\/Lauren-Image1.jpg 869w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Welcome back everyone!\u00a0 Hope you\u2019ve all had a fantastic break!\u00a0 Are you guys ready for an exciting semester?<\/p>\n<p>A little while ago, I wrote a post with some tips on how to end your internship on a high note!\u00a0\u00a0 While leaving a great last impression is important, it\u2019s also crucial to start out your internship on the right foot!<\/p>\n<p>I just recently had my first day as a social media intern at 451 Marketing, and while starting out at a new company can be intimidating, it\u2019s also a great experience.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some simple tips for making a great first impression at the start of your internship:<\/p>\n<p><b>1. <\/b><b>Be punctual!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Nothing looks worse than being late on the first day, or on any day, of your internship.\u00a0 It may take a few weeks to get into the swing of the morning commute, so for your first few days, make sure you leave with plenty of time to get there,\u00a0 taking into consideration that there could be back-ups or traffic delays (sometimes, public transportation can be a little unreliable.)<\/p>\n<p><b>2. <\/b><b>Don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll probably get a lot of information thrown at you on your first day, so speak up if you have any questions!\u00a0 Don\u2019t know where the bathroom is?\u00a0 Ask an employee or fellow intern! \u00a0\u00a0Want to find a place to get lunch?\u00a0 See if the receptionist can give you any suggestions!\u00a0 Don\u2019t be shy, or it could hurt you in the long run!<\/p>\n<p><b>3. <\/b><b>Shake hands and be friendly!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On the first day, you\u2019ll probably meet tons of people, everyone from the CEO to your fellow interns!\u00a0 When you\u2019re being introduced or meeting a new person, smile, make eye contact and give a nice, firm handshake!\u00a0 Always remember to be polite and enthusiastic.\u00a0 After all, it\u2019s exciting to meet new people!<\/p>\n<p><b>4. <\/b><b>Don\u2019t play on your phone or go on Facebook!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Constantly checking your phone and texting your friends is not appropriate in the office, especially as an intern.\u00a0 Avoid the temptation by keeping your phone turned off and in your purse or pocket!\u00a0 Also, don\u2019t go on your Facebook or Twitter page when you\u2019re supposed to be doing an assignment on the computer.\u00a0 This will make you look very unprofessional.\u00a0 You\u2019re there to learn, so save the personal browsing for when you\u2019re in your dorm!<\/p>\n<p><b>5. <\/b><b>Don\u2019t be too nervous!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Remember, you were hired because the people at the company liked you!\u00a0 Relax, have fun and be confident! Remember that this is a learning experience and an amazing opportunity for you!\u00a0 Enjoy it, and get as much out of it as possible!<\/p>\n<p>It can sometimes be challenging to juggle classes and an internship, but it will definitely be worth it in the long run!
