This screening series is part of the department&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/academics\/film-tv\/cinematheque\/\">Cinemath\u00e8que<\/a>: meetings and conversations with filmmakers\/television-makers.\u00a0The series&#8217; curator is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geraldpeary.com\/\">Gerald Peary<\/a>, a cinema professor at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffolk.edu\/\" target=\"_new\">Suffolk University<\/a>\u00a0and a long-time film critic for the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonphoenix.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Boston Phoenix<\/a><\/em>. He chooses his BU programs based on his extensive contacts in the professional film world and from his travels to film festivals around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>For each featured production, a special guest \u00a0(the producer, filmmaker, etc.)\u00a0is invited to COM for the screening. During the screening, film students quickly escort the filmmaker to a brief interview shoot. \u00a0Afterwards, a Q&amp;A is held to provide more information to the audience regarding the production process.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment949\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment949\" style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Setting up the interview.\" class=\" wp-image-949 \" style=\"border: 0px;margin: 5px\" height=\"339\" width=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Setting up the interview with Journalism and Film\/TV graduate students .<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, it wasn&#8217;t until after this year&#8217;s first screening that the After this year\u2019s first screening, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/academics\/film-tv\/cinematheque\/\">Cinemath\u00e8que<\/a>\u00a0team decided they wanted to shoot interviews with the featured guests. Clearly, figuring out the production technicalities for these interviews would not be an issue, but what they did need was someone who could ask the right questions.<\/p>\n<p>Without much thought, fingers pointed in the direction of third semester Broadcast Journalism graduate student, Alistair Birrell. \u201cI thought it would be a good way to hone my interviewing skills,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, October 24, Birrell interviewed filmmaker\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/frankvross.com\/\">Frank V. Ross<\/a>, during the screening of his film,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/frankvross.com\/uploads\/TIGER_TAIL_in_BLUE-EPK.pdf\"><i>Tiger Tail in Blue<\/i><\/a>. This was Birrell\u2019s second interview of the semester for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/academics\/film-tv\/cinematheque\/\">Cinemath\u00e8que<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al-5-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Allistair Birrell interviews filmmaker Frank V. Ross.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With only a fifteen minute window, Birrell must make sure he steers the interview in the correct way. \u201cWhere are you from?\u201d Ross asked Birrell during the interview. \u201cI\u2019m from Scotland, but we can talk about me later,\u201d Birrell quickly responded.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/comgrad\/files\/2014\/11\/Al-4-1024x576.jpg\" height=\"339\" width=\"604\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Birrell prepares some of his questions beforehand.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After each interview, students on the production\u00a0team edit\u00a0the video down to around three or four minutes. All interviews are featured on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/academics\/film-tv\/cinematheque\/\">Cinemath\u00e8que<\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>page, so be sure to check out Alistair&#8217;s full interview with Ross.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this program is an excellent example of COM&#8217;s Film and Television department preparing its students with hands-on, practical experience for the ever so competitive entertainment industry.
