I am  certain that if you took, on the one hand, an old-order Romantic and, on the  other hand, what de Tocqueville predicts will happen to literature with the  development of democracy\u2014taking the common man as its subject, having a strong  interest in the future, using more realist vocabulary\u2014you would get me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8211; French novelist Michel Houellebecq, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6040\/the-art-of-fiction-no-206-michel-houellebecq\">in an interview<\/a> with Susannah Hunnewell for <em>The Paris Review<\/em>, characterizing himself as belonging to a literary and intellectual tradition that includes <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/core\/cc203\">de Tocqueville<\/a> among other Core authors &#8212; elsewhere, he counts Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky among his influences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not long ago, I read de Tocqueville\u2019s Democracy in America.
