{"id":204,"date":"2010-10-05T09:42:40","date_gmt":"2010-10-05T13:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/core\/?p=204"},"modified":"2010-10-06T17:01:06","modified_gmt":"2010-10-06T21:01:06","slug":"tabatabai-to-read-at-persian-autumn-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/core\/2010\/10\/05\/tabatabai-to-read-at-persian-autumn-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"Tabatabai to read at Persian autumn celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-207\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/core\/files\/2010\/10\/ST.jpg\" alt=\"Sassan Tabatabai\" width=\"75\" height=\"72\" \/>Our own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/faculty\/tabatabai.htm\">Prof. Sassan Tabatabai<\/a> will be reading works from the Persian canon as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/bostonpoetry.com\/press\/uzunburun-by-sassan-tabatabai.html\">his own poetry<\/a>, at a celebration of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mehregan\">Mehregan<\/a>, a Persian harvest celebration, to be held this Thursday, October 7th. As many Core folks may already know, Prof. Tabatabai is a poet and translator whose work has appeared in a number of publications. He is the author of <em>Father of Songs: Rudaki and his poetry<\/em> (Rozenberg\/Purdue U.P., 2008) and the forthcoming <em>Uzunburun: Poems<\/em> (Pen and Anvil Press, 2010). He also serves as Poetry Editor of <em>The Republic of Letters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>His reading will be part of a larger evening of events sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/people.bu.edu\/persians\/\">Persian Students Association<\/a>, and begins at 7 PM in the Faculty Dining Room <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/gsu\/main.html\">at the GSU<\/a>. For the price of admission &#8212; $7 at the door &#8212; attendees will experience Persian food, music and poetry.<\/p>\n<p>The poem below, a Tabatabai original, appeared in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/av\/core\/journal\/journal10.pdf\">Spring 2010<\/a> issue of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/community\/journal.htm\">Core journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Garden of Eden&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pink bougainvilleas climb the wall<br \/>\nbehind the round table<br \/>\nwhere we always sit.<br \/>\nIt is the bright tapestry that frames<br \/>\nour evening photos:<br \/>\nwine-weary eyes,<br \/>\nworry-less smiles.<br \/>\nIt is the backdrop of our laughs.<\/p>\n<p>By the window, red hibiscus<br \/>\npoint their flutes at the sea.<br \/>\nThey are trumpets of dawn<br \/>\nand open with the sun<br \/>\nto reveal points of golden pollen<br \/>\nthat stain the shoulders of my shirts.<\/p>\n<p>On the blue horizon, the seam disappears<br \/>\nbetween the Mediterranean and the sky.<\/p>\n<p>The rosemary bush in the corner<br \/>\nattracts a flock of intoxicated<br \/>\nbutterflies and bees,<br \/>\noblivious to the stalking lizard<br \/>\nthat like some diminutive dinosaur<br \/>\nis coiled to pounce on its prey.<\/p>\n<p>Along the front gate,<br \/>\njasmine and gardenias<br \/>\npour forth pillars of perfume,<br \/>\nboth upon greetings and farewell,<br \/>\nto this garden by the sea.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our own Prof. Sassan Tabatabai will be reading works from the Persian canon as well as his own poetry, at a celebration of Mehregan, a Persian harvest celebration, to be held this Thursday, October 7th.
