Here is an extract:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The speaker of\u00a0Elizabeth Bishop\u2019s &#8216;In the Waiting Room&#8217;\u00a0has a famously crucial moment in a doctor\u2019s office, too.\u00a0She looks around at all the adults, all the\u00a0<em>human beings<\/em> surrounding her, and sees only body parts, or items of clothing: knees, boots, and \u201cpairs of hands \/ lying under the lamps.\u201d It\u2019s like a scene from a horror movie&#8230;Even as she\u2019s awakening to her self, her I-ness, she\u2019s also awakening to her them-ness, and it is terrible, necessary, and awesome.<\/p>\n<p>But ultimately unsustainable. The parted veil must fall back into place.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then I was back in it.<br \/>\nThe War was on.
