{"id":4565,"date":"2015-07-28T13:08:44","date_gmt":"2015-07-28T17:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/core\/?p=4565"},"modified":"2015-07-28T13:09:30","modified_gmt":"2015-07-28T17:09:30","slug":"have-it-your-way-cheeseburgers-and-moral-responsility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/core\/2015\/07\/28\/have-it-your-way-cheeseburgers-and-moral-responsility\/","title":{"rendered":"Have It Your Way: Cheeseburgers and Moral Responsility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/core\/files\/2015\/07\/ethics.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/core\/files\/2015\/07\/ethics-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"ethics\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-4566 alignright\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/core\/files\/2015\/07\/ethics-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/core\/files\/2015\/07\/ethics.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here at the Core, we spend a great deal of time examining a wide range of perspectives on morality, returning semester after semester to examine questions such as &#8220;how do we define right and wrong?&#8221; and even &#8220;do right and wrong really exist?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As we explore these ethical questions through the lenses of science, literature, and philosophy, it can be helpful to reference professional ethicists to shed light on our discussion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faculty.ucr.edu\/~eschwitz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Schwitzgebel<\/a>, philosophy professor at UC Riverside, takes a &#8216;meta&#8217; approach to these conversations in a recent piece for <em>aeon magazine<\/em>, titled <a href=\"http:\/\/aeon.co\/magazine\/philosophy\/how-often-do-ethics-professors-call-their-mothers\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Cheeseburger ethics&#8221;<\/a>. In the piece, he raises intriguing questions, such as: &#8220;Are ethics professionals good people, and if not, what is the point in learning ethics?&#8221; And further, he wonders about the ethics of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_ethicists\" target=\"_blank\">professional ethicists<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I meet an ethicist for the first time by ethicist, I mean a professor of philosophy who specialises in teaching and researching ethics its my habit to ask whether ethicists behave any differently to other types of professor. Most say no.<\/p>\n<p>Ill probe further: why not? Shouldn&#8217;t regularly thinking about ethics have some sort of influence on ones own behaviour? Doesn&#8217;t it seem that it would?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We recommend this piece as being 1) entertaining, 2) provocative, and 3) not visibly unethical.
