But errs not Nature from this gracious end, <\/dt>\n
From burning suns when livid deaths descend, <\/dt>\n
When earthquakes swallow, or when tempests sweep <\/dt>\n
Towns to one grave, whole nations to the deep? <\/dt>\n
“No,” ’tis replied, “the first Almighty Cause <\/dt>\n
Acts not by partial but by gen’ral laws; <\/dt>\n
Th’exceptions few; some change since all began <\/dt>\n
And what created perfect?”–Why then man? <\/dt>\n
If the great end be human happiness, <\/dt>\n
Then Nature deviates; and can man do less? <\/dt>\n
As much that end a constant course requires <\/dt>\n
Of showers and sunshine, as of man’s desires; <\/dt>\n
As much eternal springs and cloudless skies, <\/dt>\n
As men for ever temp’rate, calm, and wise. <\/dt>\n
If plagues or earthquakes break not Heav’n’s design, <\/dt>\n
Why then a Borgia or a Cataline? <\/dt>\n
Who knows but He, whose hand the lightning forms, <\/dt>\n
Who heaves old ocean, and who wings the storms; <\/dt>\n
Pours fierce ambition in a C\u00e6sar’s mind, <\/dt>\n
Or turns young Ammon loose to scourge mankind? <\/dt>\n
From pride, from pride, our very reas’ning springs; <\/dt>\n
Account for moral as for natural things: <\/dt>\n
Why charge we Heav’n in those, in these acquit? <\/dt>\n
In both, to reason right is to submit. <\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/blockquote>\n
