Those monkeys are banging away at their typewriters, trying to type out the complete works of Shakespeare. Every time there\u2019s a problem involving randomness, the monkeys <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Infinite_monkey_theorem\">get called into action<\/a>. But these are not your average monkeys. No, these are <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jargon.net\/jargonfile\/g\/gedanken.html\">gedanken<\/a> <\/em>monkeys. They can madly type 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No banana breaks, no rest stops\u2014just four fingers plus opposable thumb, keystroke after keystroke.<\/p>\n<p>Since most of us don\u2019t have the age of the universe to wait for these monkeys to finish this extraordinary assignment, it\u2019s interesting to see how quickly they can proceed if <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_selection\">selection<\/a> is introduced. The British biologist <a href=\"http:\/\/richarddawkins.net\/\">Richard Dawkins<\/a> talks <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weasel_program\">about this<\/a> in his book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blind-Watchmaker-Evidence-Evolution-Universe\/dp\/0393315703\">The Blind Watchmaker<\/a><\/em>; here&#8217;s a video excerpt of the juicy bits (the <em>gedanken<\/em> monkeys make their appearance at 4:45; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5sUQIpFajsg\">see the original on YouTube source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"474\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/5sUQIpFajsg?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"474\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/5sUQIpFajsg?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impressive to see how quickly the phrase \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=METHINKS+IT+IS+LIKE+A+WEASEL\">METHINKS IT IS LIKE A WEASEL<\/a>\u201d (a line from Shakespeare\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hamlet-Signet-Classic-Shakespeare-William\/dp\/0451526929\/\">Hamlet<\/a><\/em>), for example, can be generated with selection. Dawkins goes on to give a picture of how the eye could have evolved thanks to selection. The entire ten minutes is defnitely worth <em>your<\/em> ten minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>&#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/faculty\/hudon.htm\">Prof. Daniel Hudon<\/a>, who teaches evolution <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/av\/core\/syllabi\/106-11.pdf\">among other topics<\/a> as a faculty member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/cc106\/\">CC106: Biodiversity<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you see them?
