{"id":1237,"date":"2014-03-21T16:44:35","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T20:44:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/crwr\/?p=1237"},"modified":"2014-03-21T16:44:59","modified_gmt":"2014-03-21T20:44:59","slug":"world-poetry-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/crwr\/2014\/03\/21\/world-poetry-day\/","title":{"rendered":"World Poetry Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/crwr\/files\/2014\/03\/VassarionEB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/crwr\/files\/2014\/03\/VassarionEB-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"VassarionEB\" class=\" wp-image-1238 alignleft\" height=\"400\" width=\"307\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hello all!<\/p>\n<p>Today is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Poetry_Day\">World Poetry Day, <\/a>and pretty soon I&#8217;m headed to hear some at the <a href=\"http:\/\/breakwaterreadingseries.blogspot.com\/\">Breakwater Reading Series<\/a>.\u00a0 So come join us, or at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/page.php\/prmID\/409\">put a poem in your pocket<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some links from around the web on this sunny Friday:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/rmcnamar\/383\/bishop.html\">&#8220;Sestina&#8221;<\/a> was the first Elizabeth Bishop poem I ever read.<\/p>\n<p>I find this funny every time: Keats&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/poems.com\/Poets%27%20Picks%202012\/April_02_Don_Share.html\">&#8220;To Mrs. Reynold&#8217;s Cat.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A student shared this with me: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oP3c1h8v2ZQ\">the shape of stories,<\/a> according to Kurt Vonnegut.\u00a0 (My student showed me &#8216;before&#8217; and &#8216;after&#8217; shapes of his story for class, pre and post revisions.\u00a0 Love that.)<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of students, here are some poems my EN202 writers read last year:<\/p>\n<p>Pablo Neruda&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csee.umbc.edu\/~stephens\/POEMS\/neruda\">&#8220;Ode to Salt.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Margaret Atwood&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poets.org\/viewmedia.php\/prmMID\/16221\">&#8220;Variation(s) on the Word Sleep.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0 Some students found this creepy, but others thought it beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/atc\/features\/2004\/aug\/kooser\/poems.html\">&#8220;Father&#8221;<\/a> by Ted Kooser.<\/p>\n<p>And, because it&#8217;s fun to see what the kids are reading these days, here are some poems that those same students shared with <em>me:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/exceptindreams.livejournal.com\/77387.html\">&#8220;someone should write me a love poem<\/a> but I&#8217;m stuck doing it myself&#8221; by Daphne Gottlieb.\u00a0 Yes.
