Here is the\u00a0title poem:<\/p>\n

On the 5th day of a month
\nmade of harmattan and cold sun,
\nmy mother washed dirt off grains of rice,<\/p>\n

chopped carrots, onions, pepper
\nand liver on a slab into rings —
\nbeating our stomachs to music.<\/p>\n

My older sister slit open
\nthe belly of a huge Eja Kote —
\npacked out its intestine as one offloads<\/p>\n

clothes from a bag. Beads of sweat slipped
\ndown their faces like rain on windshields.
\nThe sitting-room: strands of Juju<\/p>\n

melody streamed out of the stereo —
\nthe house covered with music.
\nFrom the kitchen: my mother’s efforts smelled<\/p>\n

delicious. My mother wore
\naso-oke — she danced, and we ate —
\nraising cups in praise of her loneliness.<\/p>\n
