Daphne Kalotay tells us how"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/crwr\/2014\/05\/28\/daphne-kalotay-to-read-at-newtonville-books-tomorrow\/daphnekalotay\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1353\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/crwr\/files\/2014\/05\/DaphneKalotay.jpeg\" alt=\"DaphneKalotay\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1353\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this last month of summer, we&#8217;re excited to feature a few blog posts about the writing life, alongside the usual publication announcements. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vidaweb.org\/meet-the-charrettes\/\">This essay<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Daphne Kalotay (Fiction 1994) is about\u00a0creating\u00a0discussion groups that make for meaningful, stimulating, and rich conversations among writers, conversations that also seek to creatively address matters of craft.\u00a0\u00a0Such groups\u00a0are called charrettes, and Daphne defines one as:<\/p>\n<p>1. An intensive group enquiry into a technical issue or design challenge<\/p>\n<p>2. A collaborative meeting focused on solving a problem through a diversity of ideas<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the case of definition number one,&#8221; Daphne writes, &#8220;I wanted to signal that our charrette was an\u00a0<strong>inquiry<\/strong>: that we were to show up with open minds and honest questions. By \u201cdesign challenge\u201d I meant matters of composition that arise when we write. By \u201ctechnical issue\u201d I meant that things might get nerdy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Daphne also says, &#8220;It wasn\u2019t the first time I\u2019d found myself in a wonky technical discussion about the nitty-gritties of written composition, but the energy and caliber of our conversation was striking.
