Caitlin Doyle\u00a0(Poetry \u201908) has been selected as one of 100 doctoral students in the United States and Canada to receive the P.E.O Scholar Award!\u00a0This prestigious prize recognizes Doyle\u2019s artistic and scholarly achievements. Among the doctoral students chosen as P.E.O Scholars, Caitlin has been granted the further distinction of receiving one of the foundation\u2019s specially endowed awards. She has been named the Presidential Endowed Scholar for 2018-2019, an honor given to a sole doctoral student in the United States and Canada every two years. According to the P.E.O Board of Trustees, this recognition is \u201creserved for our finest scholars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a recent article in\u00a0The Key Reporter<\/i>\u00a0about Doyle\u2019s selection for the P.E.O Scholar Award, University of Cincinnati professor John Drury characterized Doyle as \u201can innovative master with elements of poetic form, such as rhyme and meter.\u201d The article also quotes Rebecca Lindenberg, current Poetry Editor of\u00a0The Cincinnati Review<\/i>: \u201cDoyle\u2019s poetry,\u201d Lindenberg says, \u201creads like Literature with a capital L.\u201d Boston University\u2019s own Robert Pinsky describes Doyle as \u201ca poet of grace\u201d and \u201cformal ebullience\u201d who possess a \u201cgorgeous, original imagination.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We were lucky enough to hear from Caitlin herself about her summer reading lists.\u00a0 She says:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve been studying all summer for my doctoral exams and one of my areas of concentration is diasporic literature, so I’m reading a variety of novels and poetry collections that touch on themes related to diaspora, immigration, and the creation of cultural identity. Highlights thus far include\u00a0<\/em>Bye Bye Blackbird\u00a0by Anita Desai,\u00a0<\/em>The Nature of Blood\u00a0by Caryl Phillips,\u00a0<\/em>Breath, Eyes, Memory\u00a0by Edwidge Danticat,\u00a0<\/em>Engine Empire\u00a0by Cathy Park Hong,\u00a0<\/em>Operation Shylock: A Confession\u00a0by Philip Roth, and\u00a0<\/em>Brooklyn\u00a0by Colm Tobin. If I have time to slip in some lighter beach reading before the fall semester starts, I’d love to scope out\u00a0<\/em>The President is Missing, a thriller co-written by Bill Clinton and James Paterson. Anthony Lane’s hilarious review in\u00a0<\/em>The New Yorker\u00a0made the book sound like an irresistibly fun indulgence, a perfect palate cleanser between exam study sessions.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Caitlin Doyle is currently pursuing a PhD in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Cincinnati, where she holds an Elliston Fellowship in Poetry and serves as an Assistant Editor at\u00a0The Cincinnati Review<\/i>.\u00a0 Doyle\u2019s poems, essays, and reviews have appeared innumerous journals, magazines, and anthologies, including\u00a0The Atlantic<\/i>,\u00a0The Guardian<\/i>,\u00a0The Yale Review<\/i>,\u00a0The Threepenny Review<\/i>,\u00a0Boston Review<\/i>,\u00a0The Black Warrior Review<\/i>, and\u00a0Best New Poets<\/i>. Her work has also been featured through the PBS\u00a0NewsHour\u00a0<\/i>Poetry Series and Poetry Daily.
