Author of three bestselling books on Italy, plus a dozen novels,  including the Booker short-listed\u00a0Europa,  he has translated works by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alberto_Moravia\">Moravia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italo_Calvino\">Calvino<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roberto_Calasso\">Calasso<\/a> and, most  recently, Machiavelli. While running a post-graduate degree course in  translation at IULM University, Milan, he writes regularly for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/\">LRB<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/\">NYRB<\/a>.
