The White Coat Ceremony is still fresh in my mind. As I spoke to the crowd it was exciting to observe enthusiastic; somewhat timid, first year medical students as they discovered that it had finally happened….they were going to be physicians. The energy was palpable. It was a great beginning and anything seemed possible as these new recruits joined our healing profession. I can’t help but compare it to the discouragement on the faces of seasoned physicians I meet who struggle daily to provide the best medical care they can, who haggle with insurance companies over diagnostic testing, who struggle to meet the rising costs of running a practice…all part of the frustration of the current health care system in our country. But on today, I feel very optimistic. The challenge to revamp our health care system is in good hands.
