It’s up to you now…what kind of journalist will you be? \u00a0Undoubtedly, at first, the fact that you’re working in the “biz” will be the hook…But where does it go from there? \u00a0If you’ve been a follower of this blog or a student at the seminar series, I hoped you’ve picked up enough along the way to have a pretty good clue…The guests and events of this just past week certainly drove home some salient points in 2015…<\/p>\n
“Accountability of the bloggers, the tweeters, of high school kids”, warned\u00a0Rob Bradford<\/a> of WEEI.com. \u00a0“So many of these other people (other than he and his fellow working reporters, i presume) want to be this but they don’t have the experience, they don’t know what they’re doing, and more importantly, they don’t have the accountability. \u00a0If someone from the (Boston)Globe<\/em> or (Boston)Herald<\/em> is as wrong as some of these people, they’re fired! \u00a0they’re fired! And it’s a trend that’s not going to stop. \u00a0You can do whatever you want!”<\/p>\n Kirk Minihane<\/a> , also of WEEI joined Bradford in our final session and if there was anyone who seems to be doing anything he wants, it’s Minihane…. His on air dust-ups with Joe Haggerty<\/a> and Gary Tanguay\u00a0<\/a>might have been a bit contrived but the talk show host seems to be almost lamenting the lack of personality in the industry at the same time. \u00a0“There’s nobody young that’s made an impact here (Boston) in a long time. \u00a0There’s nobody in their 20’s, their 30’s that’s kicking ass on the radio, on t-v, in print, that next generation kind of thing. \u00a0It’s open, open for someone who’s not afraid to take chances.” \u00a0I’m not sure we can chalk these incidents up to “chances” but it’s still an interesting proposition. \u00a0Do we really need to revisit the Erin Andrews<\/a> rant? \u00a0Boston sports talk radio is littered with vanilla, middle of the road hosts who couldn’t get listeners to listen. Local television is worse, the format is king in that medium, not the players. \u00a0So maybe Minihane has something there.<\/p>\n So how do you put yourself out there and still be help accountable? One needed only to have an eye on Las Vegas this past week and you just might have found \u00a0your answer…<\/p>\n
